Shamcey Supsup Says Joining Showbiz is Not a Priority

Fresh from the Miss Universe 2011 held at Sau Paulo in Brazil, our very own Shamcey Supsup is already on her way back to Los Angeles with her mother to get some much needed rest. Shamcey said it is likely that she will return to the Philippines on September 16, where a hero’s welcome is waiting for her.

Shamcey, a 25-year-old architect and a native of General Santos City, wowed fans all over the world in her performance in the prestigious international beauty pageant. She bested 89 other ladies from across the globe and became the third runner-up, with Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, winning the Miss Universe 2011 crown.

But to many Filipinos, Shamcey should’ve been the winner of the pageant because of her impressive answer in the final question and answer portion. To judge Viveca Fox’s question about love over religion, the Pinay representative said she will not change her beliefs for the sake of the man she loves. Shamcey later revealed that her answer was based on her real-life experience because her boyfriend became a Born-again Christian because of her. “My mom is really strict,” said Shamcey. “She always tells me na, dapat yung magiging boyfriend or asawa ko should be a Christian first, and that our relationship will be centered with God.”

She added that she is happy with being third runner-up and asked her supporters to also be happy for her. “In a competition there’s [always] a winner. Someone will lose, someone will win. You should just accept things for what they are. I think that’s what makes a winner, not just the crown but being able to accept na hindi ikaw 'yung nanalo.”

Shamcey just took pride in the compliments she received from fellow candidates right after the pageant. She shared, “Lahat sila sobrang happy for me. They come to me because they never see me as a competitor. It was a good thing because they love me. They were very happy for me. They were telling me ‘You have the best answer. We love your answer.”

Among the five beauties who reached the final question and answer portion, Shamcey was the only one who didn’t ask for the help of an interpreter and answered in straight English. Many are questioning the weight of this in the pageant. Bianca Manalo, Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2009, believes getting an interpreter could be a strategy of some candidates. “Marunong namang mag English halos lahat, so bakit kailangan ng interpreter? Parang buying time lang. Baka 'yung mga interpreters minsan, napapaganda pa 'yung sinabi, nakakaisip pa sila ng mga flowery words.”

First Pinay Miss Universe, Gloria Diaz, explained that winning in the said pageant is 99% luck. “Everybody has things to say but like I’ve always said, first of all you will not be there if you’re not beautiful, if you’re not smart, if you’re not tall or pretty. But I’ve told this over and over. It’s 99% luck. Everybody has an opinion why she did not win, whether the answer was good enough or not good enough. To some people it was smart, to some people it was kulang. But really it’s just luck at the end of the day.”

Many beauty queens who came before Shamcey have joined showbiz following their respective reigns, like last year’s Miss Universe fourth runner-up Venus Raj who is now one of the hosts of Umagang Kay Ganda. But for Shamcey, getting into showbiz is not part of her priorities. “Right now I’m not sure kung saan ako dadalahin ng mga bagay-bagay but I’m sure I’m going to be in architecture talaga. I don’t know when pero wala namang time limit ang pagiging architect.”

Venus Raj Contented With Shamcey Supsup's Ranking

Beauty queen Venus Raj said she is contented with the third runner-up finish of Shamcey Supsup at the 60th Miss Universe pageant in Sao Paolo, Brazil on Monday (Tuesday in Manila).

"Ako kuntento. Kasi nakita niyo sa mga interview ni Shamcey, siya mismo kuntento sa nakuha niya, so bakit ako hindi makukuntento kung 'yung tao mismo ay kuntento," Raj, who was fourth runner-up in last year's Miss Universe pageant, said on ABS-CBN morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda," where she is a host.

Raj added that she is happy for Leila Lopes of Angola, who was crowned Miss Universe 2011.

"I'm just happy for Miss Angola kasi hindi ko alam kung first time ito na Angola ang nanalo, pero ngayon ko lang nakita na Angola ang nanalo," she said.

"Ang kagandahan dito ay magiging inspirasyon siya (Lopes) sa mga tao. For example, sa mga taga-Angola na naghahangad sumali sa Miss Universe at iba pang beauty pageant."

Meanwhile, Raj commended Supsup for being the only Miss Universe contestant this year who answered the pageant's final question in English.

On Tuesday, just minutes after Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011, Filipino netizens noted that she looks a lot like Raj. Because of the "striking resemblance between the two beauty queens, Raj made it to Twitter's top trending topics in the country.

The Filipina beauty ranked fifth in the list as of Wednesday morning.

Lea Salonga Ranked Shamcey Supsup Second

The country's bet in the 2011 Miss Universe, Shamcey Supsup, finished fourth (or third runner-up) in the prestigious beauty pageant. But one of the nine judges ranked her second.

Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, the only Filipina judge in this year's Miss Universe, said she "really liked her (Supsup's) answer as she displayed conviction and honesty."

"I ranked Shamcey Supsup second, if I'm being honest," she wrote in an article published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Wednesday.

Salonga said she had no idea how the rest of the judges scored Supsup.

The exception, however, was Leila Lopes of Angola, who was crowned this year's Miss Universe. Salonga said they were "all unanimous in our decision."

"She radiated grace and elegance from the moment she stepped on stage, and gave a great answer to her final question (which I happened to ask her; she picked my name out of the fishbowl. And that is all, lest anyone think that I made luto that process. No way.)," she wrote.

Even though she failed to get the crown, Supsup "represented our country very well," according to Salonga.

"Smart, spirited, gorgeous. I wasn't at all disappointed because she displayed what is so great about Filipino women: strength, beauty, intelligence. She should be very happy," she wrote.

"First thing I said to her was congratulations! I then asked if I could have a photo taken with her."

On Tuesday, Salonga made it clear that she did not write the question for Lopes in the final leg of the Miss Universe pageant.

"Just so you all know, I did not write my question. All our questions are pre-written and each judge is assigned one. Luck of the draw," she said on her Twitter account.

Marilou Diaz-Abaya's 'Ikaw Ang Pag-Ibig' Starts Showing Today

Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s latest film, “Ikaw ang Pag-ibig,” is a must-see movie for the family, if only for the inspiration that it gives viewers. Produced by the Archdiocese of Caceres and Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s Film Institute and Art Center, with the support of lay benefactors and investors, the movie stars Marvin Agustin, Jomari Yllana and Ina Feleo in the lead roles.

“Ikaw ang Pag-ibig” was made last year in commemoration of the Tercentenary of the Devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia to which Marilou is a devotee. It tells the story of a young, contemporary but rebellious woman video editor (Vangie Cruz, played by Ina) whose only Brother, Fr. Johnny (Marvin) a newly ordained priest, is diagnosed to be suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). As his sibling, Vangie is called upon to be donor for her brother’s bone marrow transplant.

Nereo P. Odchimar, Bishop of Tandag and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) noted: “It is not easy for the sister to decide to be a donor for her brother’s bone marrow transplant due to clinical phobia resulting from an attempted, but failed, abortion. (Vangie here has a child with Dr. Joey Lucas, played by Jomari who she refuses to marry.)

Also starring Jaime Fabregas, Nonie Buencamino, Shamaine Centenera, Yogo Singh with the special participation of Mr. Eddie Garcia, “Ikaw ang Pag-ibig” was graded “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

Released by Star Cinema, “Ikaw ang Pag-ibig” opens today (Sept. 14) in local theaters. It was also endorsed by the Manila Archdiocesan & Parochial Schools Association, Inc. (MAPSA).

Piolo Pascual Won't Stop Acting

Actor Piolo Pascual said he won't leave acting to concentrate on his singer career.

"FIrst love ko ang acting. Di natin pwedeng tanggalin natin yan sa agenda natin sa buhay kasi doon tayo nakilala at yun talaga ang parang bread and butter ko," Pascual said during a rehearsal for his album tour in Singapore.

"So yung singing it's an opportunity for me to do something else other than acting. So ini-exhaust ko lang din yung pwede kong gawin but siyempre ang first love ko pa din ay acting," he added.

The actor said that as a proof of his love for acting, he is set to do a new series again.

"At sa katunayan nag-confirm na 'yung mga kasama kong cast para sa soap. I just got the confirmation today and first week of October start na kami ng taping," Pascual said.

Pascual said that right now he's enjoying his time singing and really excited to promote his album "Decades" in Singapore this September 18.

"This coming weekend, I'm going to Singapore and I'm bringing a live band with me so I'm really excited. Actually first time kong magpe-perform with a band, kasama pa si Yeng Constantino," Pascual said.

He is also set to go to Hong Kong to promote his album on October.

Shamcey Supsup Says Boyfriend Changed Beliefs for Her

Filipina beauty Shamcey Supsup, the 3rd runner-up of the Miss Universe 2011 pageant, admitted that she is a Christian and that her boyfriend changed his religious beliefs for her.

Speaking to ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda", Supsup said her boyfriend is a former Catholic who now shares her faith.

"At first (he was not a Christian)," she said.

Asked if he converted religion for her, she said: "Yes."

Supsup refused to give more details about her boyfriend. She told ABS-CBN hosts Anthony Taberna and Alvin Elchico: "Baka pag ito yung tanong, baka po tinanggal na ako sa top 5."

She also noted that the question she got in the question and answer portion of the Miss Universe contest was made for her.

During the pageant, Supsup was asked if she would change her religious beliefs to marry the person she loves.

She answered: "If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me and I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too."

Her answer landed her in 4th place, with Miss Angola Leila Lopes winning the title of Miss Universe.

Supsup later credited her mom for her answer in the contest.

"My mom is really strict. She always tells me na, dapat yung magiging boyfriend or asawa ko should be a Christian first, and that our relationship will be centered with God," she said.

She added that she had no plans of hiding her relationship. "Di ako showbiz eh. I want people to know about it," she said.

Shamcey Supsup Decides to Answer in English

Miss Universe 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup said that it was her decision to answer the question in English and without an interpreter during the 60th Miss Universe pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Supsup said she was worried about the time limit so she decided to answer in English.

"Kasi siyempre we have a time limit kasi kapag may interpreter ka mas mahihirapan ka. At least mas maganda ang impact kasi mas maraming nakaka-intindi sa iyo when you speak in English," she said in an ABS-CBN "Umagang Kay Ganda" interview.

Many Filipinos noted Supsup should have gotten plus points for answering her question without the need for an interpreter.

Supsup reiterated that Filipinos like her should learn to accept the judges' decision.

"Unang una, the fact lang na iniisip nila yon of me I'm honored. I think it's already enough for me. At lagi kong sinasabi whatever the results are we should accept it as it is. There are judges that were selected to select who will win. So para sa akin I accept it with grateful heart and I hope na matanggap ng tao yung result," she said.

When asked if she believes that the result was politicized, Supsup replied: "Naku lagi naman tayong ganoon. Kumbaga I believe naman siguro na they deserved whatever title they have now like Miss Angola, and I think we should support her and be happy for her."

She also addressed the issue that she prayed not to win because she doesn't want to stay in New York.

"Hindi naman hindi ko pinagdasal na hindi ako manalo. Sabi ko lang give me what you want to give me. Please bless me whatever the plans you have for me and whatever your will, I will accept it with my whole heart," she said.

Supsup is now on her way to Los Angeles to spend time with her mother. She said it is likely that she will return to the Philippines on September 16.

"Sabi ko nga it's a good thing that I will be able to rest here and I'm sure when I come back bising-busy na ako. I don't know kung anong specific activities na gagawin ko. I just know it's going to be hectic," she concluded.

Gary Valenciano's Hopes for the Local Recording Industry

Gary Valenciano recently celebrated his 28th year in showbiz with the ABS-CBN special With Love, Gary V. Push.com.ph asked Mr. Pure Energy if there are plans to create a weekly musical-variety program where he will be the main star. “It would be great to have one. If you guys have suggestions about a show that I can do, feel free to send them,” said the concert icon.

If ever Gary will do his own show, he said it would be great if it would be something new. “Everything has been done na yata. Reality, talent search, musical, talk. Gusto ko dati na mag-host ng parang So You Think You Can Dance. Pero may Showtime na and Pilipinas Got Talent. Mabibilib ka sa mga dancers na na-discover nila. Gusto ko sana ‘yung bago naman.”

Aside from performing on TV and in concerts, Gary shared that he still has so many things in his “to-do” list. He explained why he wants to study audio-engineering abroad. “I want to study abroad, audio-engineering, and then come back so I can teach what I learned. Pagdating kasi sa song writing, we’re just as good as anybody in the world. But when it comes to recording and making the sound good, medyo behind pa tayong mga Pinoy.”

Gary laughed when he shared the instance when he listened to some musical arrangements done by Black Eyed Peas singer and Pinoy pride Apl.D.Ap. “One time pumasok ako sa studio with Apl.D.Ap, ipinarinig niya sa akin ‘yung isang ginawa niyang kanta. Ang ganda. Nung ipinarinig ko sa kanya ‘yung akin, ang layo ng tunog. Pero gusto niya ‘yung song writing. ‘Yung ‘Shout For Joy’ ang ipinarinig ko sa kanya. Sana one day maging kasing galing nila tayo sa recording.”

Maja Salvador's ‘Thelma’ to be Shown in Hawaii International Film Festival

After her US trip for the Kapamilya Teleserye tour, Maja Salvador shared that she is excited to fly back to the US for the international screening of her movieThelma. The movie was invited to be part of the Cultural and Literacy Program of the 31st Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) which will run from October 13 to 23. Maja will be joined by director Paul Soriano as well as the producers of Thelma. “Inimbitahan kami dun. I guess pagkabalik ko ng US tour namin, lipad naman ako after two days papuntaHawaii for Thelma. Si Jason Abalos actually ang alam ko didiretso siya dun. Hindi ko lang alam kung pinayagan siya. Kasi part din siya ng Thelma. So he’s also invited,” she shared during her appearance as a Chic Nails Salon celebrity endorser.

The 22-year-old actress admitted that she has already made preparations with regards to what she will be wearing at the film festival. “Kinausap ko si Pepsi Herrera kasi siya yung paborito ko ngayon. Sobrang pinaganda niya ako nung Star Magic Ball, pati nung dalawang premiere night ng Thelma. Sobrang gaganda ng mga ginawa niya so sabi ko mas pagandahin mo pa sa festival sa Hawaii,” she shared.

With regards to the recent revelation that she and Matteo Guidicelli are indeed seeing each other, Maja demurred from giving additional details to the press. “Siguro sa amin na lang din yun. Siguro enough na na nalaman ng public na we’re together and hanggang dun na lang. Parang we decided na not to update everything in public. So okay na yun. Okay na lang na alam niyo na we’re together, tama na yun. May mga infona kayong nalaman sa The Buzz so yun na lang,” she said.

Maja, who plays the role of an aspiring runner from the province in the movie Thelma, said she is happy now despite the recent events that have taken place in her life like the recent altercation between her boyfriend Matteo and Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin co-star Coco Martin. “Basta lagi po akong masaya. Sabi ko nga sa mga interviewsko dati, hindi naman laging masaya, halos lahat nga ng puwede ngang mapagdaanan ng isang tao mapagdadaanan niya talaga. So tao lang din po ako. Isa rin akong ordinaryong tao na napagdaanan lahat ng napagdadaanan ng lahat ng ordinaryong tao,” she admitted.

Maja said that although she has not yet spoken to Coco, she knows they will be able to smooth things over when they go on the Teleserye tour with other Kapamilya celebrities from different TV series. “Sana makapag-usap kami soon. Kasi meron naman kaming US tour. We’re a love team so siguradong maaayos lahat. Makakapag-usap kami. Kaya abangan pa rin nila kami sa US tour,” she said. When asked if them spending time abroad together will spark another issue between her and Matteo, Maja chose to deflect the query by answering, “You can ask Matteo.”

Erich Gonzales Appreciates Enchong Dee's Concern for Her

Erich Gonzales had a seizure on the set of Maria La Del Barrio due to a sudden drop of her sugar level. But during the recent thanksgiving press con of her soap, the young actress assured the local press that she has fully recovered from her illness. “During taping bumaba yung sugar level ko tapos may halong overfatigue na rin, pagod at puyat dahil galing akong Bangkok para sa trabaho din. But I’m okay now.”

Asked how she feels about previous reports saying that she got possessed by bad spirits, Erich merely laughed at such an outrageous idea. “Dun na lang po tayo sa diagnosis ng doctor which is hypoglycemia or pagbaba ng sugar level. Kasi normally 90 or 100 dapat, pero sa akin it dropped to 40. So I think it’s normal na nangyari sa akin yung symptoms na pagkahilo at panginginig. Pero kung ano man gustong isipin ng iba, sila po ang bahala,” said Erich who obviously lost a few pounds due to her illness.

More than anything else, Erich shared that she learned the importance of maintaining good health. “I eat a lot of healthy food naman pero hindi on time. So siguro ngayon kailangan maging conscious sa oras ng pagkain. Hindi pwede na kung kailan ka lang gutom saka ka lang kakain. I also take vitamins. Kailangan palakasin ang immune system tsaka resistensya mo kasi sa panahon ngayon iba-ibang klaseng sakit ang pwedeng dumapo sayo.

Erich also thanked her leading man Enchong Dee for his concern when she got rushed to the hospital. Apparently, the young actor went out of his way just to make sure she was okay that day. “I am very thankful kasi yung Maria La Del Barrio family ko hindi ako iniwanan, sinamahan nila ako sa hospital. Masaya dahil talagang pamilya ang turingan namin.”

But she couldn’t help but add that Enchong asked her to be his date at the Star Magic ball while she was still in the hospital. “Pagkagising ko tumawag siya. Sabi niya, ‘O since gising ka na, ito na yung perfect time para tanungin kita. Will you be my date tomorrow?’ Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Wow ha! Ang sweet mo. Hindi mo man lang ako kinumusta?’ Pero ayun, ganon lang talaga kami ka-close. Wala ng pakiyeme-kiyeme. Sobrang nakakatuwa.”
