The business unit head of “Banana Split” maintained that the burning of Mr. Fu’s photo in one of the show’s episodes was not done out of spite for the radio and TV host.
Cynthia Jordan, the BUH of the said gag show, released the following statement on the matter as posted on PEP Scoopbox, Jan. 3:
"Definitely not true that we 'hate' mr fu. the segment was abt 'things that u have to leave' 2010. Isa duon ay yung mga overused terms like 'meganun' and 'eowphoz', and yung mga tampuhan issues like [C]ristine (Reyes) n [Sarah Geronimo], [A]ga [Muhlach] n [S]haron [Cuneta] etc. pinakita dun ang mga pics nila but it doesnt mean na galit kami sa kanila, we are referring to the issue related to them and not them per se. Hope this clears out any [miscommunication] issues,” her statement read.
“Pinoy Big Brother” big winner Melai Cantiveros, who hosted the segment that was part of the New Year’s Day episode of “Banana Split,” became the target of criticism, reportedly of Mr. Fu’s fans, for burning the comedian’s photo.
Jordan reportedly said that Cantiveros has nothing personal against Mr. Fu, as Cristy Fermin related in the Jan. 3 episode of “Juicy.”
As posted also on PEP Scoopbox, Mr. Fu aired his sentiments on Cantiveros’ act.
"Wala naman akong nagagawang masama kay Melai para gawin niya yun. At di ko gagawin yun sa kanya[…] no one deserves that. Happy New Year!" he was quoted as saying.
Earlier, he made a seemingly related post on the matter via his Twitter account.
“i don't burn bridges...and i don't burn pictures...ay..may ganon?!” he tweeted on Monday afternoon.
In response to a follower, who tweeted, “sinunog ni melai yung picture mo sa banana split,” Mr. Fu said, “oo. maganda kasi siya. chos. may ganon?!”
Mr. Fu’s photo was the last item burned in Cantiveros’ “Banana Split” segment.
“Iwanan na natin sa 2010 ang nakakarinding katagang ‘meganun?’” she began, holding a photo of Mr. Fu with “meganun,” a term he popularized.
Pointing to Mr. Fu’s face, Cantiveros added: “Tingnan mo ‘yung mukha nito parang si Megatron!”
She then threw the photo into a large garbage bin where photos of other personalities and subjects have already been burned.
“Hayan, nasusunog na si Megatron! At sama-sama silang nasusunog! Sana hindi natin sila marinig, makita o ma-experience sa 2011!” said Cantiveros.
Other subjects-to-be-forgotten that Cantiveros mentioned include the words “jejemon” and “major major;” the highly publicized rifts between Claudine Barretto and Angelica Panganiban, between Aga Muhlach and Sharon Cuneta, and between Cristine Reyes and Sarah Geronimo; the Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson love team; trite teleserye storylines; and even the popular online game “Plants vs. Zombies.”
Though intended to be a comic segment, the hosts of “Juicy” didn’t find Cantiveros’ act funny.
“Alam mo ang gawin mo sunugin mo ‘yang ‘over, over’,” said IC Mendoza, pertaining to Melai’s infamous expression.
Although shows follow certain scripts, Fermin said that artists should also be responsible for the lines assigned to them.
Although sharp-tongued Mo Twister respects Cantiveros’ statement, he appealed to her to have “a little credibility.”
“Ayaw niya ng ‘may ganon,’ fine. Pero Melai, have a little credibility. There’s nothing you do that Mr. Fu can’t do better…” he said.
Fermin cited fellow showbiz writer Reggie Bonoan’s column which included a statement purportedly made by Cantiveros during her segment.
“Sa column ng ating kasamang si Reggie Bonoan, ang nakalagay, [sinabi ni Melai na] ‘wag nating pamarisan ang taong ito [Mr. Fu],'” she said.
Cantiveros, however, did not utter the said quote in her spiel.
