Angelica Panganiban Remembers How She Started in Showbiz

Displaying acting excellence in both tearjerkers and comedy, Angelica or simply Angel, actually started out in showbiz as a promising child star known for her convincing portrayals of aggrieved and vulnerable young roles.

“Six years-old pa lang ako nung nag-start ako magmodel for Little Miss SM, so parang contest siya. May mga agent do’n tapos kinuha ako para mag-commercial, nagpa-VTR ako, tapos ‘dun na nag-start. Pag may tumatawag, nagpapa-audition, kailangan daw ng bata, so, punta naman ako. Kung maaalala ko, before that, four times ako nag-attempt sumali sa Ang TV. Lagi akong nag-o-audition. Pero never akong natanggap,” she said recalling her entry to showbiz as a child actress.

Her innocent face and her ability to cry easily were perfect for tearjerker roles in various movies such as Sarah, Ang Munting Prinsesa, Antipolo Massacre, and Separada which earned her a FAMAS Best Child Actress Award.

“Syempre malaking-malaki yung difference, batang-bata pa ako noon. Syempre yung iniiyakan mo nun, sabihan ka lang ng director, ‘Naku, iwan ka na ng mama mo.’ Iyak na iyak na ‘ko noon. “ Angel jokingly said about her role as poor Becky in Sarah, Ang Munting Prinsesa.

Veteran entertainment columnist and radio host Cristy Fermin would be quoted saying, “Kahit nu’ng child star pa lang siya na puro luha lang ang kanyang kakambal at bihirang-bihira siyang ngumiti ay sinabi na naming, isang araw ay magkakaroon ng sarili niyang puwesto sa local na aliwan si Angelica, dahil nasa kanya na ang halos lahat ng katangiang kailangan mayroon ang isang sisikat na artista. Hindi lang siya basta maganda, lutang ang talento niya sa pagganap, malalim ang pinaghuhugutan ng pag-arte ni Angel dahil lumaki siyang nanay lang ang kanyang kasama.”
Later on, silver screen’s crybaby would grow into a lovely young lady.

Her latent potential was again tapped for other projects including teen-oriented shows G-mik and Berks as well as primetime stellar Sa Puso Ko Iingatan Ka and Familia Zaragoza. She would eventually develop for more mature roles in movies Santa Santita and A Love Story alongside famed industry icons.

In 2006, Angelica stepped out of her teenybopper image as she graced the cover of Maxim Men’s Magazine’s maiden issue. With her innocent aura and a hot bod, Angel’s bold career move proved to be a worthy gamble. Moving on to more mature roles, she readily accepted and effectively portrayed sexy and daring roles in her succeeding movie outings. And later on, starred in the Filipino adaptation of the hit Mexican telenovela, Rubi in her home studio, ABS-CBN.

Zaijan Jaranilla and Bimby Aquino-Yap Named Most Favorite Child Personality

President Benigno Aquino III’s nephew, James “Bimby” Yap Jr., received the Most Favorite Child Personality award at the 1st Lingkod TV Awards on Tuesday night.

Young stars Zaijan Jaranilla and Jillian Ward were also given the same award.

Bimby is the 3-year-old son of estranged couple Kris Aquino and James Yap, while Jaranilla rose to stardom after playing Santino in the popular and award-winning program “May Bukas Pa.”

Ward, meantime, is a known child actress and commercial model.

According to reports, Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos and Comedy King Dolphy would also be conferred the Life Achievement Awards at the 1st Lingkod TV Awards.

The Lingkod TV Awards is a product of a long-term research of the National Council for Children's Television (NCCT).

The NCCT is an attached agency of the Department of Education tasked to promote and encourage the production and broadcasting of developmentally appropriate television programs for children.

The NCCT is also behind AnakTV Awards.

Meanwhile, Bimby’s high profile parents accompanied the 3-year-old toddler at the awarding ceremony held at the Rajah Sulayman Theater at Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila.

Aquino and Yap said they were very happy and proud of their son.

When asked about the status of their relationship, Aquino and Yap reiterated that they are now friends. Aquino is also planning to go on a vacation with Bimby and her eldest son, Joshua, from a past relationship.

She said the vacation was temporarily put on hold when she became busy promoting her horror flick, “Dalaw,” an entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.

Rift Between Sarah Geronimo and Cristine Reyes Ends?

Both camps of Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo and sultry actress Cristine Reyes have already put an end to their controversy, according to Reyes’s sister, Ara Mina.

"I think tinapos na ng dalawang kampo," Mina told reporters during the 36th Metro Manila Film Festival awards nights at the Meralco Theater on Sunday.

Mina disclosed that her sister talked to her about the issue, and that she fully understands why Reyes expressed her anger against Geronimo via microblogging site Twitter.

"Hindi din magkakaganoon ang isang tao kung walang pinanggagalingan. At sila lang tatlo ni Sarah, Rayver (Cruz) at Cristine ang nakakaalam," Mina explained.

On the reported meddling of Megastar Sharon Cuneta, Mina said: "Siguro natural lang 'yon kasi kaibigan niya si Sarah pero hindi na dapat lumaki. After ng interview kay Sharon ay wala ka ng narinig. Ibig sabihin tapos na. So, hindi na lumaki. Both sides ay tahimik."

On Twitter, Reyes lambasted the pop star princess over her purported snide remark that was made during rehearsals for variety show “ASAP XV.”

Based on Reyes's tweets, what caught her ire was when she said that a sexy woman would also chase a guy with good dancing skill.

Upon learning about Geronimo’s statement, Reyes, who was voted as FHM’s sexiest woman and whose current boyfriend is actor-dancer Cruz, believed that it was meant for her.

Kris Aquino Ecstatic Over Success of Dalaw

“Dalaw” lead star Kris Aquino could not be any happier after her first produced movie made it to the top 3 of the box office among the 8 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entries.

Last Saturday on “E-Live,” Aquino revealed that she was not aiming for any award in the MMFF. Her only hope is for people to see what “Dalaw” has to offer and to recover the capital she had invested in producing the film. She also wished for the film to make it to the top 3.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Tuesday, Aquino shared that “Dalaw” has consistently been doing well and it has already reached its break-even point during the film’s first showing day.

“I’m really very happy kasi ang ganda ng pag-end ng taon. Winish ko lang top 3, binigay talaga ni God. The biggest blessing there, on a day to day basis, consistent,” she said.

Although she did not get any nominations in the recent MMFF awards night, Aquino genuinely expressed how thankful she is for the support “Dalaw” has been getting.

In addition to this, the Queen of Talk is also grateful for all the things she has received in 2010. She stressed how she appreciates the trust ABS-CBN gives her.

In the same interview, Aquino excitedly divulged her upcoming shows in the network.

According to her, the auditions for “Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2” will soon be starting as the new year enters. She also divulged that in February, she will be hosting a new game show titled “The Price is Right.”

“Bago ako mag-birthday, simula na sa February ang "The Price is Right." Abangan niyo 'yon because for the first time talaga, araw-araw puwedeng manalo ng brand new car,” she excitedly said.

Meanwhile, as the anullment of her marriage to estranged husband James Yap is still pending, Aquino revealed that she is happy to be friends with Yap after all that has happened.

She disclosed that she and Yap were together with Joshua and Baby James on Christmas Day. She also shared that her family invited Yap during the recent birthday of her sister Pinky.

Wenn Deramas Got His First Best Director Award for Tanging Ina

Sa panayam matapos ng awards night na ginanap sa Meralco Theater noong Linggo, December 26, winika ng first-time best director awardee na ikinatuwa niya ang pagkilala ng jurors sa mga comedy films.

Big winners kasi ang mga comedians sa Gabi ng Parangal dahil ang top acting honors ay nakopo ng mga comedians.

Ang Comedy King na si Dolphy ay Best actor for Father Jejemon at Best Supporting Actor pa para sa Rosario; ang bida ng Ang Tanging Ina Mo na si Ai-Ai delas Alas ay nagwaging Best Actress; at si Eugene Domingo naman ang itinanghal na Best Supporting Actress para pa rin sa Ang Tanging Ina Mo.

"Sobra akong nagpapasalamat kasi binigyan halaga ang comedy," sabi ng direktor.

"Alam mo naman dito sa atin, di ba, lagi na lang di nabibigyan ng atensiyon ang comedy? Kaya sobrang nagpapasalamat dahil binigyan nila [jurors] ng importansiya ang comedy."

Was he expecting anything?

"No. Definitely, wala akong ini-expect nang pumunta ako rito dahil nandito ako para sumuporta.

"Sabi ng Star Cinema, suportahan natin ang MMFF. Iyon lang. Iyon lang talaga," wika ni Direk Wenn.

Ano ang kanyang naging pakiramdam nang manalo ng dalawang awards si Mel Mendoza-del Rosario for Best Screenplay at Best Story para sa kanilang pelikula?

"Sobra na akong natutuwa nang kinukuha ko ang mga awards nila—yung mga awards ng wala sa awards night, like si Uge [Eugene Domingo]. Sobrang okay na ako. E, may bonus pa!

"Nang tinawag ang pangalan ko na Best Director, natuyo talaga ang bibig ko. Talagang walang water kaya nahirapan akong magsalita ako roon kanina.

"Hindi ko na alam kung ano ang mga sinabi ko. Hindi ko alam kung napasalamatan ko ba ang mga dapat kong pasalamatan. Nataranta ako kasi hindi naman talaga ako ready. Salamat sa Diyos," saad pa niya.

Kaya ba siya hindi nag-expect dahil sa quality ng competition? Mabibigat at magagaling ang mga kalaban?

"Hindi kasi ako puwedeng magsalita dahil pelikula ko pa lang ang napanood ko, so hindi ako puwedeng mag-comment na natakot ako dahil magagaling lahat ng mga kalaban ko. Hindi.

"Clueless ako pagdating doon. Pero ngayon na mayroon na akong sapat na panahon at oras, gagawin ko iyon, papanoorin ko lahat!" sabi ng direktor.

Sinasabi nilang last installment na ito ng Ang Tanging Ina. Pero matapos niyang manalo ng Best Director award, may kasunod pa ba ito?

"Actually, kanina pa nila ako kinukulit," banggit ni Direk Wenn.

"Sa ngayon, talagang last na ito, not unless magkaroon ng isang napakagandang istorya uli. Kasi nang gawin namin itong Part 3, feeling namin, last na 'yan.

"Noong gawin nga namin ang Part 2, akala namin wala na rin kasunod. So, nang mag-come up ang istorya na ito, ginawa namin.

"Pero kunwari, talagang may istorya na super-ganda talaga, na hindi ko mahihindian, why not? Pero sa ngayon, palagay ko, last na talaga ito."

Sa huling panayam kay Direk Wenn, sinabi niya na more than winning an award for best director, mas gusto niya makitang manalo ng Best Actress award si Ai-Ai. Natupad naman ang kanyang wish.

"Noong presscon ng movie, ang dasal ko lang naman ay manalo si Ai-Ai ng Best Actress award. So, sobra akong natuwa.

"Itong mga bonus na panalo na ito ay sobra-sobra dahil nakita ko kung paano talaga trinabaho ni Ai-Ai ang role niya sa movie, yung pelikula, dahil sa kanya 'yon. Kaya naman sobra akong nagpapasalamat na lahat kami napansin, hindi lang si Ai-Ai.

"Maraming sakripisyo si Ai-Ai sa film ito. Ito yung film na sobra siyang harassed. Ang dami niyang ginagawa, pero tinanggal niya lahat ng iba niyang mga schedules para sa pelikula niyang ito. Talagang ibinigay niya lahat.

"Minsan halos di na siya matulog, se-segue pero wala kang maririnig. Basta kung ano ang ipagagawa ko, gagawin niya. At naiintindihan niya.

"Siguro sobra na rin ang friendship namin, talagang it's beyond the word friendship na kaya wala na kaming kahit na ano pang... Basta, iyon na iyon," pahayag ng award-winning director.

Anne Curtis Ousts Marian Rivera on SM Residences Endorsement

Anne Curtis is the new endorser of SM Development Corporation (SMDC) SM Residences condominium. Marian Rivera was (and still is, until January 2011) the endorser of the SM Residences mid to high-end condo properties of SMDC, but was unceremoniously dropped for Anne (her contract started Dec.1). The unofficial reason, if the kibitzers would be believed, is that SMDC daw is alarmed at the spate of bad publicity that Marian Rivera has been getting. Specifically, the questions on her character and behavior as a person, in short, her bad manners daw! SMDC deemed it daw to have Anne Curtis represent the SM Residences mid to high-end condo properties of SMDC as its endorser, because Anne Curtis daw gives a positive vibe and a more classy sophistication.

Jewel Mische on MMK

ABS-CBN’s new contract star, Jewel Mische, is making her acting debut on longest-running drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK).”

Mische said she is honored to appear in the the award-winning television program.

"It feels great. Bata pa lamang ako ay natatandaan kong pinapanood ko ang mga episode ng MMK. I'm just so privileged to be here right now at bilang ito ang aking unang project [sa ABS-CBN]," Mische said.

In the episode, Mische's character will fall in love with her gay best friend to be portrayed by Baron Geisler.

"Dapat abangan nila ang istorya on how it will develop," Mische said.

The 20-year-old actress was also happy to be paired with Geisler, considered one of the great actors of his generation.

"Sa akin pong pagkakaalam at impormasyon na natanggap ay magaling gumanap sa kung anumang role niya ngayon. Kasi po sinabi sa akin na ‘yong role na ito ay very few lang ang pinagpilian and they really picked Baron for it," Mische said.

Mische, a product of GMA 7's reality-based talent search, made a big leap as she signed a 2-year exclusive contract with ABS-CBN's Star Magic.

She said: "I feel very much welcomed. Noong isang araw pa lang ay kinakausap na ako ni Tita Mariole (Alberto of Star Magic) at ang mga taong involved ay nagre-reach out para i-welcome ako, para maging kumportable ako sa first taping day," the actress said.

After MMK, Mische is looking forward to her first ABS-CBN TV series titled "Bagwis" opposite Gerald Anderson.
