Chino Lui Pio on Being a MYX VJ

MYX VJ Chino Lui Pio knows how tough the competition is in the entertainment industry, which is why he’s determined to make the most out of all the opportunities that comes with his job. “It’s my second year as a MYX VJ and until now I’m having a blast. Hindi ko in-expect na ganito ako magiging ka-happy sa MYX. I am really grateful for the whole experience. Kahit the next day mawala ako, though ‘wag naman sana, pero ‘pag nangyari yun, no hard feelings for me because I enjoyed every minute of my work,” said the charming 25-year old in an interview with ABS-CBN.com.

Chino further shared that he enjoys getting up close and personal with a lot of his favorite foreign artists like Paramore, Dashboard Confessional, and Akon to name a few. “I never imagined that I’d get to interview them. Before kasi wala pa masyadong pumupuntang international artists dito sa Philippines. So watching them live and jamming with the crowd, grabe na yung feeling. But meeting them, talking to them, shaking their hands, alam mo yun? Iba talaga especially because I am a big fan of music.”

A lot of music fanatics would surely envy Chino as he never misses an opportunity to have his photo taken with theses artists and get their autographs for him to treasure even long after his stint as a MYX VJ. “Siguro yung iba iisipin nagpapa-cool ako na kailangan ‘di ako magpa-picture and magpa-autograph. But for me kailangan ko ng proof! You’re there so grab the opportunity, nagpapa-picture talaga ako. I bring my cam, my own pentel pen and t-shirt to have it signed. Actually, I have a collection of t-shirts that I hang on my wall at home na napa-sign ko na. Hopefully dumami pa.”

But more important than his fan moments, Chino claimed that his hosting stint has not only improved his self-confidence but also his willingness to try out new things. For instance, he’s not closing doors when it comes to venturing into show business in the future. “Acting is okay with me. As long as bagay sa akin yung role and I think I can do it well, why not? I am not saying no kasi before sabi ko sa dad ko ayoko maging MYX VJ kasi hindi ko talaga kaya. And now I am here and I am having a great time. I guess I learned a lesson,” he added.

Balls Channel Launches KaRUNungan 2010

Balls channel is one with Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) as it launches KaRUNungan 2010, which aims to help generate awareness and support for the continued resource and learning gaps in the Philippine education system. The funds it will raise through this campaign will be used to produce instructional shows in English, Science and Math, using “virtual” teachers on air. KCFI wishes to help the majority of elementary and high school students, who are still unable to attain adequate mastery of their lessons.

Through KaRUNungan 2010 and various running events, KCFI enjoins the growing Filipino community of runners to champion the cause of Philippine education, and give Filipino students their second wind that will help them reach the finish line. As KaRUNungan 2010′s theme says, “Every Learner, A Finisher.”

KaRUNungan 2010 Manila will be held on November 28 at the Meralco Compound in Ortigas. A total of 5,000 runners are expected to join the event, which has 3k, 5k, 10k and 15k categories.

Court of Appeals Junks ABS-CBN's Case Against GMA7

The Court of Appeals (CA) has scrapped the case filed by ABS-CBN against the GMA Network, for what it claimed as a violation of RA 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines).

In a 14-page ruling issued last Monday, the fourth division of the appellate court has set aside the resolution of the Department of Justice issued last June 29 by then Secretary Alberto Agra, which approved the filing of violation of RA 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines) against GMA.

The appeals court agreed that Secretary Raul Gonzalez was correct in clearing GMA executives for supposed violation of Sections 177 and 211 of the RA 8293 in an earlier DOJ resolution dated Aug.1, 2005.

It ruled that GMA’s airing of at least “five seconds” of ABS-CBN’s footage of the arrival of hostage victim Angelo dela Cruz from Iraq in 2004 was attended by “good faith” since there was no intention to “cause injury” to its rival network.

According to the the CA ruling, “Petitioners cannot be plausibly faulted for airing the live video feed that it had received from Reuters and CNN. Without malice and intent to cause injury to the private respondent, the act of petitioners in airing the disputed footage was simply founded on their belief that as a subscriber of said television services, they are allowed and contractually entitled to use the footage.”

The CA also noted that GMA immediately stopped using the video footage upon realizing that ABS-CBN was actually covering said news event.

The CA stressed that apart from lack of intent of GMA to grab the video from ABS-CBN, the act also cannot be considered violation of Sections 212.4 and 185.1 of RA 8293 since it was just a “short excerpt” compared to the entirety of the subject new footage.

Recall that both ABS-CBN and GMA made their respective broadcasts and coverage of the arrival of dela Cruz on July 22, 2004.

ABS-CBN aired live audio-video coverage of the arrival of dela Cruz at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and the subsequent press conference.

The video was carried by Reuters Television Service on the condition that any of the footage would be considered by the latter under embargo against use by others.

GMA, being a subscriber of both Reuters and CNN, was able to receive the live video feed of the coverage of said arrival that was beamed by Reuters from the NAIA.

GMA later claimed that it did notice that what Reuters was airing were footage of ABS-CBN only after already airing the Reuters feed in its flash news report. The network consequently stopped airing the video footage.

Reuters admitted that it wasn’t able to inform the petitioners of the embargo in favor of ABS-CBN.

Tonsillectomy for Angelica Panganiban

Actress Angelica Panganiban has been advised by her doctor to undergo a surgery to remove her tonsils, her actor-boyfriend revealed.

"[It has] something to do with her heart, it's something clog. I don't know what it is exactly pero link 'yon sa tonsil niya. Ina-advise nga sa kanya na tanggalin ang tonsil niya," Derek Ramsay said.

Ramsay, who underwent knee surgery in February of this year, is urging his girlfriend to heed the doctor’s advice.

"So, ikaw kailangan mo ng gawin 'yon dahil nagpa-opera na ako sa tuhod," Ramsay said when asked for a message.

The actor had to undergo a 40-minute knee surgery after injuring it while playing Frisbee. He, however, delayed the operation despite prodding from Panganiban and his family, saying he was afraid to be confined in a hospital.

He only relented when he could no longer stand the pain.

During her free time, the actress took good care of Ramsay until he recovered

No Competition Between K Brosas and Pokwang

Two of the most in demand comedians K Brosas and Pokwang brushed off rumors saying they are trying to outdo each other in popular afternoon variety show “Pilipinas Win na Win” (PWNW).

In an interview with “Showbiz News Ngayon” on Wednesday, Brosas refuted the rumors saying she and Pokwang are good friends - on and off cam.

“Hindi kami nagsasapawan. Walang ganoon. Nagbibigayan. 'Tsaka nakakatawa, mayroon kaming rapport na normal, hindi namin pinag-usapan. Kusa siyang lumabas,” Brosas said.

On the other hand, Pokwang said in a separate interview that PWNW hosts have equal distribution of labor in the show and that they do not steal each other’s moments.

“Nakikita niyo naman siguro iyong division of labor namin hindi ba? May kanya-kanya kaming moment,” she said.

Brosas filled in for Pokwang’s role while the latter went out of the country for some work commitments.

The two are now hosting PWNW together bringing joy to a lot of its viewers.

Ryan Bang on Shout Out!

As one of the most successful faces from Pinoy Big Brother Teen Clash of 2010, Ryan Bang has his hands full with tapings for shows like Showtime, Banana Split, and 30w POwhz. Starting next week, the young comedian will also be seen on the new teen-variety show program Shout Out! which airs on November 29, Monday. The 19-year-old Korean admitted he didn’t expect to get another choice project so soon in his showbiz career. “I really don’t understand why they got me. They’re all handsome and beautiful [on the show], a very nice group. I really don’t get it. I’m just a comedian. Actually I’m very happy to be part of Shout Out!, but I really don’t understand why they got me. Maybe they have comedy game, that’s why they got me,” he humbly said. The show also features Erich Gonzales, Enchong Dee, Arron Villaflor, Empress, and Sam Concepcion as its main hosts as well as other PBB Teen housemates. “Of course I’m so happy to be working with them. I’m always happy. My best friend is James (Reid), Bret (Jackson), Ivan (Dorschner), everyone. But especially James and Bret because I thought I was the number one laziest person in the world but no, they’re more lazy then me so I like them, (laughs)” he said.

With his career on the rise, Ryan said he doesn’t allow his rising popularity to get to his ego. “I feel very good. I’m following the flow. I don’t think about it too much. I don’t know yet what I will do in Shout Out! I just know I just go with the flow and be happy,” he admitted. Aside from honing his skills in comedy, Ryan shared that he looks forward to also getting the chance to do more singing and dancing in Shout Out! Ryan also downplayed the issue that even though he did not win the grand prize in PBB, he still became the most popular teen housemate. “Everyone says that, everyone has opinion. But maybe it’s because I’m not handsome, I’m a comedian so no need workshop. Everyone knows that. Actually I can just go. But them, they’re handsome, they need a lot of workshop. They need to learn acting. I’m not handsome that’s why people like me. I’m just myself. Just being natural,” he insisted.

Cathy Garcia-Molina on Being a Box Office Director

Director Cathy Garcia Molina is expected to come up with another blockbuster with her latest movie, the John Lloyd Cruz-Toni Gonzaga romantic comedy entitled My Amnesia Girl. Direk Cathy also helmed the past box office hits One More Chance, A Very Special Love, and You Changed My Life, all produced by Star Cinema and all starring John Lloyd. The movie and TV director has been named Film Director of the Year for three consecutive years by the Box Office Entertainment Awards.

During the press conference for My Amnesia Girl, Direk Cathy was asked whom between her and director Wenn Deramas she thought deserved the title “Box Office Director” more. Direk Wenn has also helmed blockbuster movies, which includes Ang Tanging Ina, Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat, and BFF: Best Friends Forever. Direk Cathy seemed a bit embarrassed about the question and answered, “Si Direk Wenn na! Ha ha ha!”

She further explained that she was never particular about titles. “Ever since talaga allergic ako sa mga ganyang tawag kasi ayokong matawag na mayabang. Maraming salamat sa tawag na ‘yun pero kung sa iba ibibigay, walang problema sa akin. Ang gusto ko lang ay magtrabaho nang mahusay.”

Direk Cathy said she is just like any other filmmaker who always wants to offer something new to the audience. That’s why she is very much excited with My Amnesia Girl because this is the first onscreen pairing of John Lloyd and Toni. “Parang there’s really nothing more than the first team-up of Toni who is a good actress in terms of comedy and John Lloyd as a great actor. Sila na mismo ang strength ng movie. Just them being together is the best selling point of the movie.”

She also likened Toni’s chemistry with John Lloyd to that of the actor’s past onscreen rapport with Bea Alonzo and Sarah Geronimo. Direk Cathy explained, “I always believe na bawat tao iba iba. So bawat pair ay iba iba ang kayang ibigay. John Lloyd and Bea (One More Chance, Miss You Like Crazy) ay ibang mga movies ang ginagawa. ‘Yung John Lloyd-Sarah (A Very Special Love, You Changed My Life) ang medyo hawig dito sa John Lloyd-Toni, but still cannot be compared. Bata pa si Sarah at boy-meets-girl ang kwento so ibang chemistry ‘yung hiningi ng kwento nila. Itong My Amnesia Girl mas mature kasi mag-ex na sila sa story, so marami nang nakaraan.”
