My Girl Star Lee Da Hae Apologizes to Filipinos

I'm a little bit thirsty. Can I have a glass of water please?"

"First, I'd like to give you my sincere apologies for what seems to be a misunderstanding.

"It has come to my attention that many of you from the Philippines have posted comments protesting that i was being derisive by mimicking Filipinos when they speak English.

"Therefore, in light of this matter I'd like to take this opportunity to clear the air.

"In spite of what many people believe, I myself did NOT mention anything about the Philippines or Filipino accent whilst on the TV show.

"On the other hand, I recall bringing up Southeast Asia and not the Philippines, and the subtitles were inserted when the show was being edited, of which I was not aware of until it was aired.

"The TV show where this footage was taken from was designed to amuse its audience and my sole purpose was to entertain the viewers by coming up with lighthearted stories.

"Since the producer knows that i speak English he asked me if I could share any episodes that touch upon the English language.

"As we all know every country has a typical accent when its people speak English (including myself) so after giving it some thought, I came up with a few lines where I simply tried to compare different English accents: the somewhat rigid British accent and beginners in Southeast Asia whose English tends to be a little hard-edged. No pun or ridicule was intended.

"As an individual who used to take English classes over the phone with a Filipino instructor, I give you my word that even the mere thought of mocking Filipinos would never cross my mind.

"I cannot tell you how much Filipino fans mean to me and as much as I love them, I would in no way hurt or upset them.

"I hope I have clarified any misunderstandings and once again I am truly sorry if I inadvertently hurt anyone's feelings.

"i really love you, my Filipino fans."

Sam Milby on Third World Happy

For his second indie film, Sam Milby will be playing a balikbayan for the 6th Cinema One Originals entry Third World Happy. Sam's first indie film is the action-suspense film Cul de Sac.

Directed by Edward James or EJ Salcedo, Third World Happy also stars Jodi Sta. Maria as the girlfriend who was left behind in the Philippines when Sam's character decided to go to the United States.

Sam describes his character Wesley as someone who is "manhid" and who has not yet moved on from the death of his parents.

Sam graced the press conference for the seven entries of the Cinema One digital film fest, which was held earlier today, October 26, at the 9501 restaurant located at the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

Seven Indies for the Cinema One Originals

Seven unpredictable stories from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will be presented in an annual event that aims to showcase out-of-the-box storytelling.

For the 6th edition of the Cinema One Originals film fest, these films will be screened from November 10-16 at the Shangri-La Mall in Mandaluyong City.

The finalists chosen from 100 submitted entries are: the Cebuano film Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria Kirchbaum by Remton Siega Zuasola; the social satire Astro Mayabang by JP Laxamana; the melodrama Third World Happy by EJ Salcedo; the horror-drama Dagim by Joaquin Valdes...

The Western-style action film Ishmael by Richard Somes; the true-to-life story of a Tausug boy in Tsardyer by Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez; and the family drama Layang Bilanggo by Michael Angelo Dagnalan.

This year's festival will also pay tribute to two filmmakers who are considered pillars in Philippine cinema: Celso Ad. Castillo and Lav Diaz.

Last year's recipient of the Cinema One Original Tribute award was director Danny Zialcita.

The awards night of Cinema One Originals will take place on November 14 at the Dolphy Theater, ABS-CBN compound, in Quezon City.

According to Cinema One Originals director for programming Ronald Arguelles, the next batch will feature ten finalists that will be given a grant of P1 million each.

Aspiring filmmakers have until January 14, 2011 to submit their screenplays. By March 2011, the finalists for the 7th edition of the Cinema One Originals filmfest will be revealed to the public.

During the October 26 press conference of Cinema One held at the ABS-CBN compound, many of the mainstream stars appearing in the film fest admitted that being part of these independently produced films give them an avenue to express themselves artistically.

Mark Gil pointed out exactly what this all means for artists: "Indie filmmaking brings a different level of freedom that artists like us hunger for. You give your heart and soul to your roles."

The veteran actor revealed that he and Ronnie Lazaro wrote most of the dialogue used in the indie film Ishmael. Mark is cast as a cult leader who sexually molests his own daughter Agnes (portrayed by Ria Garcia).

For his part, Ronnie did some action sequences for his roles as Ishmael, an ex-convict who resorts to murder in order to protect Agnes.

He told in an interview, "I kill people like flies. Ishmael's hands were broken so he tied two bolos to his hands to serve as weapons. Tatlong balde ng dugo ang nagamit sa pelikulang ito!"

Sam Milby also considers working on indie films a way of honing his craft.

He also said it for all of them: "Through indie films, you get to act out of the box. It's important to do indie films to help you grow as an actor."

The matinee idol said of his role as a Fil-Am painter in Third World Happy: "My character is a lost soul who is a truly gifted artist. Imagine he lost his parents at the time he got his biggest accomplishment.

"That gives him a painful irony. I'd like to show onscreen how I could fill that void Wesley has."

The very talented Dimples Romana, for her part, vividly described the hardships that she and fellow cast members experienced while shooting Tsardyer in a forest located in Boso Boso, near Bulacan.

"Pati pantal ko authentic rin kasi nakatali kaming tatlo. Pag umiihi kami, malong na lang [ang pantakip].

"Ayoko nga masyado pag-usapan ang rape scene na ginawa namin kasi medyo touchy ang eksena."

Dimples's character is named Leslie and is a TV reporter kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, along with two cameramen, portrayed by Mon Confiado and Bombi Plata.

She befriends the 10-year-old boy Shihab, portrayed by Martin delos Santos, who is tasked to charge the mobile phones used by the Abu Sayyaf to negotiate with the government while holding the media people they kidnapped.

Dimples praised Martin for being very keen about instructions and for being willing to run repeatedly across the forest without slippers for his role.

Tsardyer is loosely based on the kidnapping incident of Ces Drilon and two ABS-CBN cameramen in June 2008.

According to director Sigfreid Barros Sanchez, Ces knows about this film. He said the ABS-CBN senior correspondent even gave him contact details of the generals based in Sulu.

When Direk Sigfreid went to Sulu, in the area where the journalists were kidnapped, he recalled, "Kaharap na namin ang Abu Sayyaf pero hindi namin alam! Hindi nila kami ginalaw kasi Ramadan noon."

John "Sweet" Lapus took the time to attend the presscon to show support for the indie film Astro Mayabang, where he is cast as Mama Suk.

When asked why he agreed to accept this project despite its low budget, the Showbiz Central host explained, "Gusto ko ang Cinema One para maiba naman. Ang fresh ng ideas at ang bago ng concept."

He then quipped, "Gusto ko rin makapagtrabaho with new directors para pag sumikat sila, may utang na loob sila sa akin!"

Most of the dialogue in Astro Mayabang is in Kapampangan, which is why Direk Jason Paul conducted auditions in Metro Manila and Pampanga just to look for the lead character.

He initially had doubts about casting Arron Villaflor because of his soft-spoken and gentle disposition, but the young star proved he was up to the challenge of portraying a braggart.

Arron also had no qualms about shooting a scene wherein he wears nothing but his underwear.

The films competing in the 6th edition of Cinema One Originals filmfest are as follows:

Ang Damgo ni Eleuteria Kirchbaum by Remton Siega Zuasola is a novelty comedy about an ambitious provincial lass nicknamed Terya.

The film's title, which is in Cebuano, means "The Dreams of Eleuteria Kirchbaum."

Shot in Olango island near Cebu, the film revolves around a girl who becomes a mail-order bride to raise her family from poverty.

What's interesting about the film is that it was shot in one whole take that lasted one hour and thirty minutes.

Third World Happy of writer-director EJ Salcedo is a melodrama about a "balikbayan" artist (Sam Milby) who has not moved on from the tragic death of both his parents.

His perspective in life changes when he comes home to attend a funeral and reunites with his friends and girlfriend (Jodi Sta. Maria).

Astro Mayabang of director Jason Paul Laxamana is a social satire about a financially, socially, intellectually, and sexually frustrated boy (Arron Villaflor).

He likes to boast about nationalism and Pinoy pride, but ends up humiliated because of his misguided and aggressive ways.

Arron's onscreen partner is Megan Young. Marco Morales is cast as Arron's rival, while former Pinoy Big Brother Double Up housemate Hermes Bautista makes his big screen debut through this film.

Dagim is about two farm brothers whose search for their lost father leads them to a company of strange mountain inhabitants.

According to Direk Joaquin Valdes (who co-wrote this with J. Eliseo Sandico), the film's title is the Tagalog word for a nimbus cloud.

He says his film offers an alternate world where the tribe, led by Marc Abaya's character, has its own language and rituals.

The brothers are portrayed by newbie actors Martin del Rosario and Samuel Quintana.

Ishmael by Richard Somes is about an ex-convict who is ostracized by his neighborhood.

Little does he know that this neighborhood he once knew is set to reawaken his dark past.

Direk Richard helmed the entry Yanggaw, which won six trophies in the 2008 Cinema One Originals film fest.

Tsardyer by writer-director Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez is based on a true-to-life story of a Tausug boy who is torn between his loyalty to his Tausug brothers and his concern for the TV journalist (Dimples Romana).

When Shihab (Martin delos Reyes) hears what the abductors plan to do to their prisoners, he races not only to save them but to save war from erupting once again in the jungles of Jolo, Sulu.

Layang Bilanggo is a family drama about a fugitive on the run (Pen Medina) who yearns for the love of a daughter he abandoned several years ago.

The convicted assassin disguises himself in an attempt to become close to his daughter (Miriam Quiambao).

This film also stars Jaime Fabregas, Will Devaughn and Neil Ryan Sese.

To date, Cinema One has produced 37 entries through its annual project.

Entries such as Huling Balyan ng Buhi, Rome & Juliet, Confessional, Tambolista, and Imburnal have been honored in film festivals worldwide.

These films are produced and owned by Cinema One cable channel and Creative Programs Inc, a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.

Like Gary, Like Gab!

"I am a dancer. People have seen me dance. People have seen me act...sort of. Right now, I’m getting into music. It has always been my dream to become a producer," pahayag ni Gab sa isang interview habang siya ay nasa fashion show ng Lee sa SM Mall of Asia noong Sabado, October 30.

Aniya, "That’s always been my dream to become a producer and I’ve always been producing left and right for different artists and for different events."

"The fact that I hear people doing what I created... Now, I know [how] directors feel. I create and people perform it, it is really a different experience," saad niya.

"I don’t really feel it," sagot niya. "Because no matter how many people tell me how much I have to be like my dad, as long as my dad tells me I don’t [have to be], I’m okay with that.

"You know, everybody can tell me, ‘O, you have to be like your dad! You have to better than him! How are you gonna match up with him?'

"My dad would always tell me, ‘Be your own person.'"

"I kind of resemble him. We dance. We dress up the same way. We like the same clothes. We like the same cars. We like the same everything.

"Even with the taste with girls, ‘Dad! she’s pretty, 'no?’ And then he would agree," kuwento niya.

"I don’t get insulted when they call me Gary Junior because my dad is my dad. And for people actually calling me that, it’s not an insult but it’s more of a compliment.

"They are actually confirming that you are like him. It’s just like people saying I’m like my dad.

"And who wouldn’t want to be like a dad who loves his child? My dad loves me, I know that," sabi ni Gab.

Charice Won Icon of Tomorrow Award

Charice won the Icon of Tomorrow prize in J-14 magazine’s Teen Icon Awards, besting her 5 other fellow teen nominees from the United States and Australia.

An article posted on her fan site on Tuesday announced the 18-year-old international singing sensation's victory. The efforts of the so-called “Charice Internet Army” had paid off after the Filipino singer got the highest number of votes in the Icon of Tomorrow category.

She defeated teen stars Bella Thorne, Bridgit Mendler, Frankie Jonas and Greyson Chance from the US and Australian Cody Simpson.

The winners are featured in the magazine’s December issue.

In early September, Charice called out to all her supporters to help her win in the online voting for J-14 magazine’s Teen Icon Awards. Charice’s mother, Raquel, and her fans club had led the campaign.

According to the J-14 website, the first-ever Teen Icon Awards honored the hottest teen stars, movies, television shows, music, and web stars over the past year.

The award is the “Pyramid” singer’s newest achievement since invading the international music scene.

Recently, the Filipino songstress ranked No. 4 in US Billboard's Top Stars Under 21.

Her 2nd international single, “Pyramid,” has also reached the top of the Billboard dance/club play chart. The New York Daily News reported that she might be the first Asian to become a major pop singer in the US.

She is also one of the latest additions to the cast of hit American television series “Glee” where she plays Sunshine Corazon, a Filipino exchange student

Korina Sanchez Happy to Return to TV Patrol

Veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez is happy to return to ABS-CBN’s flagship news program “TV Patrol” starting Monday next week.

In her text message to The Philippine Star entertainment columnist Ricardo Lo, Sanchez said she is coming back to her “first love with a deeper, wider understanding of how it will work, how people are affected by what others do or do not do.”

Lo wrote about the "revamped TV Patrol" in his PhilStar column on Wednesday.

“Under my belt is something I never would have had 10, five years ago or even a year ago. My heart is full coming back with people I started and grew with. People who among ourselves have mutual respect. Lahat kami totoong nasa puso ang trabaho at serbisyo sa tao at sa masa,” the wife of defeated vice-presidential candidate and former senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II said.

Sanchez confessed that long before the confirmation from ABS-CBN, she had heard rumors about her comeback, but she chose not to take them seriously.

“The news came as a surprise,” she said. “More surprising is how fast this is happening. People around me say, ‘Finally.’ But, you know, I’ve tried to roll with all the punches and reinvent myself as many times as I thought it necessary.”

“It is always best not to allow yourself to be defined by a single show, you know. Each of us is so much more than that. But it is true that my heart is full,” the host of the magazine show “Rated K” added.

Sanchez holds the distinction of being the first female main anchor of “TV Patrol.”

According to ABS-CBN, she and former vice president and broadcast journalist Noli de Castro will join Ted Failon in TV Patrol “to form the most tried and tested news team ever assembled in the history of Philippine broadcasting.”

Karen Davila and Julius Babao are set to anchor ABS-CBN's late night newscast Bandila with Ces Drilon.

Henry Omaga-Diaz, meantime, will go back to field reporting.

As to former ABS-CBN talent Willie Revillame, Sanchez maintained that the controversial television host will always have her love, and that he remains her friend.

“Alam niya na sa pagitan namin, wala itong kasamang kumpetisyon. Nagkataon lang na pareho ang timeslot namin sa ngayon,” she said.

Sanchez and Roxas first announced their engagement on Revillame’s show, the defunct “Wowowee"of ABS-CBN.

Following a legal dispute, Revillame left ABS-CBN to host a new show on TV5, "Willing Willie." Revillame’s show and TV Patrol have the same timeslot.

Marvin Agustin Returns to ABS-CBN via Ang Tanging Ina III

Marvin Agustin is grateful to still be part of the third installment of Tanging Ina even if he is no longer with ABS-CBN and is currently with the rival network. “Parang nag-reunion ‘yung pamilya. I hope maramdaman ng tao ‘yung experience at saya at ligaya at pagmamahal ng pamilya na binuo namin from part one to part two to part three. Masarap. Pinakamasayang movie ito na ginawa ko,” he said about Tanging Ina III: Last Na ‘To.

First released in 2003, Ang Tanging Ina was top-billed by Ai-Ai de las Alas and Eugene Domingo and became a blockbuster hit. In the second film, Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat, a lot of the actors that played Ai-Ai’s children in the first movie weren’t part of it such as Marvin, Nikki Valdez, and Heart Evangelista. In part three which will be shown this December, everyone is back except for Heart, whose hectic schedule supposedly prevented her from becoming part of the movie.

“Ako, pinagdasal ko na mapasama ako. I’m very, very grateful sa mga bosses ko sa GMA, for allowing me to do this last installment of Tanging Ina,” related Marvin. “At first, kinakabahan ako kung papayagan ako. Pero alam naman nila, nararamdaman nila na I’ll be very happy to do this again with the [Tanging Ina] family at alam naman nila na ito ‘yung pinanggalingan ko.”

The actor-businessman also shared that he had to back out from the second installment due to his hectic schedule and the fact that he had to be out of the country around that time. “Kaya nga nung sinabi sa akin na baka last na ito, sabi ko, ‘Sana naman hindi lumagpas ‘yung chance at opportunity.’ Alam mo ‘yung reunion tapos hindi ka nakapunta? The chance to see everybody; mga kapatid mo, nanay mo, tapos hindi ka nakapunta parang ang sama sa loob.”

Marvin said confidently that in spite of the pressure to keep up with the success of the first two, he feels good about the movie because he knows that every member of the family can appreciate the project. “Sigurado kaming makaka-relate lahat ng Pilipino sa storyang ito. Sa dami ng OFWs at sa dami ng umaalis na anak [at] nanay sa ibang bansa and just to go home on Christmas day just to be with their families.”

Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez Returns to TV Patrol

ABS-CBN announced on Wednesday that veteran broadcast journalists Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez will be returning to TV Patrol on November 8, Monday.

"For the first time, three respected news icons in Philippine broadcast journalism are joining forces to strengthen “TV Patrol,” ABS-CBN’s flagship newscast and the leading news program in the country for the past 23 years," the country's largest broadcast network said in a statement.

"Starting November 8, Korina Sanchez and Noli 'Kabayan' De Castro will return to television to join Ted Failon in 'TV Patrol' to form the most tried and tested news team ever assembled in the history of Philippine broadcasting," ABS-CBN said.

ABS-CBN said "de Castro returns with a wider knowledge of the workings of government after his stint as vice president of the Philippines."

De Castro served as senator from 2001 to 2004 and as vice-president from 2004 to 2010. He decided not to run for the presidency in 2010, choosing instead to return to broadcasting.

Karen Davila and Julius Babao are set to join ABS-CBN's late night news program, Bandila, to join Ces Drilon as anchors.

"Drilon, Babao, and Davila will provide deeper analysis and extended coverage of the day’s biggest news in 'Bandila'," ABS-CBN said.

"The powerhouse team, all seasoned and working broadcast journalists, is collaborating to present news that matter to Filipinos all over the world and to give back to their kapamilya viewers by strengthening the public service commitment of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, the country's most credible news organization based on a recent study by Pulse Asia," the network said.

ABS-CBN said de Castro "started making a name on radio during the Martial Law years." He "is also the original anchor of 'TV Patrol,' and the hard-hitting investigative show, 'Magandang Gabi Bayan'."

The company said Failon, "in his 27 years in the industry, is the 'Sandigan ng Bayan' for his commitment and focus on issues up to their resolution."

"Sanchez, on the other hand, is the intelligent and brave 'Kakampi ng Bayan,' who has reported on the biggest news in the country since she started in ABS-CBN in 1986. She also holds the distinction of being the first female main anchor of 'TV Patrol'," ABS-CBN said.

Sanchez is married to former senator Mar Roxas, who lost in the May 2010 vice-presidential race to Jejomar Binay, former mayor of Makati City.

Pokwang Clarifies "Ingrata" Issue!

Comedienne and "Pilipinas Win na Win (PWNW)" host Pokwang has defended herself from her detractors who reportedly called her ungrateful and liar for disparaging her former boss, who is an owner of a comedy bar.

According to an online report, the 38-year-old performer allegedly gave negative statements against comedy bar Music Box, where she first worked as a stand-up comedienne. Her remarks reportedly irked owner Wowie de Dios.

In an interview with “Showbiz News Ngayon,” the PWNW host said she and de Dios were both victims of false reports.

"Okay naman, wala namang problema. Nagtaka lang ako na may ibang mga taong pi-nick up ng bonggang-bongga. Actually nakausap ko si boss Wowie, sabi niya sa akin, biktima lang kami ng mga maling kembot. Kami nalang nagkakaintindihan," said Pokwang.

Pokwang also expressed dismay over media personalities who sensationalized her statements, which almost affected her relationship with her former boss.

"Wala naman kaming problema ni boss Wowie. Hindi siya ganoong tao, may pinagaralan si boss Wowie at malawak ang pagiisip niya. Mayroon lang tayong kasamahan sa industriya na pinalaki, dinagdagan at binawasan," Pokwang added.

Pokwang also cleared rumors that she was removed from the original cast of Star Cinema's Metro Manila Film Fest entry "Tanging Ina Niyo Rin, last na to."

Pokwang said she was never part of the final “Tanging Ina” installment.

But she said she is looking forward to do a movie with its lead star, Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas.

"Iyong naman talaga ang pangarap naming dalawa. Pareho kaming nangangarap magka-movie someday together, why not, masaya, riot yon? Marami pang panahon para magkasama-sama kami," she said

Kris Aquino Will Be Back on TV Early Next Year!

Kris Aquino is currently busy filming her upcoming horror flick “Dalaw,” an entry to the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival. Next year, she will be equally busy as the new season of hit reality show “Pilipinas Got Talent” airs in January on ABS-CBN. In Mid-2011, she might also do a teleserye.

KC Concepcion's Former Manager's Statement Regarding Her Transfer to Star Magic

After moving to ABS-CBN talent management arm Star Magic, KC Concepcion’s former manager, Shirley Kuan, wished the young actress nothing but success that she deserves.

“I wish Ms. Concepcion all the success she worked hard for and the happiness she prays for in her heart. She is young and very talented, and surely the best is yet to come. Let us all continue to support and cheer her on,” Kuan said in a text message to ABS-CBN News.

Kuan also said she is willing to cooperate in any way she can for a seamless transition of management.

She said she “happily volunteered to assist in any way I can for a smooth and proper turnover” after learning last week from Star Magic head Mariole Alberto that Concepcion is the newest addition to its pool of talents.

The talent manager said it is only natural for Concepcion “to look for a new management of her choice” after she resigned as the actress’s co-manager on August 23.

Her statement contradicts rumors that their separation wasn’t smooth. Kuan called on the public to stop spreading rumors.

“Let the hurtful speculations rest as the truth shall always prevail," she said.

Kuan and Sandra Chavez used to manage Concepcion’s career. On “The Buzz” on Sunday, Concepcion thanked both of them for all the things they have done for her in the past 9 years.

She added that she is happy that they did not have any conflict when they parted ways.

Concepcion also thanked Star Magic for welcoming her.

In an official statement, Johnny Manahan, Star Magic's chairman emeritus, said Concepcion “will be treated with much decency, love, and respect by her Star Magic Management.”

“KC can likewise be assured she has the full and enthusiastic backing of ABS-CBN and her Star Magic family of artists. We are all grateful for her trust and confidence, and wish to extend our appreciation to Ms. Sandra Chavez and Ms. Shirley Kuan who have generously extended their full cooperation in making the transition smooth and cordial,” Manahan said.

“We now wish for KC to further bloom into a finer actress and entertainer and a personality worthy of admiration by a very discriminating public,” Manahan added.

Kuya Kim Will Undergo Heart Operation

TV Patrol’s resident weatherman Kim Atienza, popularly known as Kuya Kim, will again take a leave from his shows starting Monday, November 8, to undergo a heart operation.

In an interview with “Showbiz News Ngayon,” Kuya Kim disclosed that his doctors advised him to take a leave since they found a hole in his heart which caused his mild stroke last August.

“Nagkaroon ng bagong exam ang mga doktor ko, at nakita nila na ang cause pala ng stroke ko talaga ay butas sa puso at maaaring maging cause pa ng isa pang stroke. Advise ng mga doktor ko, baka mag-leave na naman tayo ng mga ilang araw simula Monday next week at magpapa-opera tayo. Tatakpan ng mga magagaling na doktor itong aking butas sa puso.”

He also shared that they are planning to feature his operation in one of his TV shows.

“Ipinakikiusap ko po kung pwedeng ma-feature namin sa Matanglawin at makita tuloy kung paano iyang operation na iyan,” he said.

Kuya Kim asked all his supporters to say a prayer for him so that his operation would be successful.

Aside from being a weather reporter for “TV Patrol,” Atienza also hosts 2 shows on ABS-CBN namely “Showtime” and “Matanglawin.”

The Legacy of Maria Ressa

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Division (NCAD) chief Maria Ressa announced weeks ago that she would not renew her contract with ABS-CBN, which ends in January 2011.

For 6 years as head of the news division, her battle cry was “excellent journalism to make the world a better place.” From the newsroom, Ressa worked to change the country, the network, and journalism.

For the country, she launched a citizen journalism campaign that, she said, was “people power with new technology.”

For the network, she set an ethical standard for ABS-CBN journalists.

And for journalism, she fought for free media that provided quality coverage for the public good.

Joining hands with citizen journalists

Ressa was passionate about citizen journalism as a tool for Filipinos to highlight the injustices in their own communities and incite national change.

In an interview shown on ANC's Storyline Special, "Once," Ressa said that after nearly 20 years as CNN’s lead investigative reporter in Asia, she made the move to ABS-CBN specifically to “commit to the country," adding that "ABS-CBN is huge...its impact on our society is immense.” She wanted news to shine a spotlight on problems that needed to be fixed and to be “infused” with values. “Values like hope and empowerment. More than anything,” Ressa said. “Forget hope. Empowerment.”

Ressa spearheaded two Boto Mo iPatrol Mo (BMPM) citizen journalism campaigns for the 2007 and 2010 general elections to push citizens to check corruption in the polls by reporting on the election process in their own communities. Citizen journalists, known as Boto Patrollers, used the Internet and mobile phone technology to inform ABS-CBN about vote buying, tampering with election documents and faking ballots. Then, the station used the power of traditional media to amplify verified information.

Jing Castañeda, one of ABS-CBN's veteran reporters, explained: “Maria envisioned a country where citizen journalists and professional journalists worked hand in hand. Citizen journalists, through ABS-CBN’s BMPM program, realized that the power to change the world, literally, is in their hands. Maria made this happen.”

Throughout 2009, ABS-CBN built the ranks of citizen journalists with school visits, training workshops, and a Boto Patrollers’ concert attended by at least 20,000 people. On Election Day 2010, BMPM had 81,000 citizen journalists to bolster the reports of some 50 professional journalists from ABS CBN. Patrollers from hundreds of barangays were incorporated into the existing order of the newsroom. Their reports strengthened media’s ability to check corruption and increased the depth and range of the network’s coverage.

The slogan of BMPM 2010 was “Ako ang Simula” or "I am the Change" – a message for Filipinos to embody constructive nation building by being the start of the change they wanted for their country. ABS-CBN New Media Manager Arlene Burgos, who co-headed the 2010 BMPM campaign, explained: “The Philippines is a young democracy. We are at that point where we are testing the limits of our own institutions. Since we are still struggling with democracy, we are learning how to participate with the government. BMPM provided citizens with the power to speak about their institutions, their government. It’s basic and yet fundamental to how democracies work.”

Saying no to corruption

Ressa said on Storyline that when ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez offered her the job as news head in 2004, he asked her to create a professional news organization and promised her full control of news. In the same special, she said, “You can not have a professional news group if you’re for sale...Change is hard...People didn’t like it. The people who benefited lost income....Before I joined ABS-CBN, I was the friend of everyone....When I joined ABS-CBN after I started making the move, boy, I cannot count the number of enemies that started racking up.”

Ressa created a standards and ethics manual to establish a moral and professional yardstick tailored specifically to the journalists at ABS-CBN. The manual guides newsmen on how to handle journalistic challenges ranging from how to cover religion to how to handle hostile situations.

One human resources (HR) representative, who was assigned to the news group when Ressa began implementing the standards and ethics code in 2006, said that it wasn’t received well initially. Between May and December of that year, there were 11 disciplinary cases, ranging from written warnings, to 2-day to a week suspensions, and 2 terminations. There was roughly the same number of cases in 2007. “Finally (in 2008), it served as their bible as journalists. And it wasn’t an excuse if they didn’t read it,” said the HR representative.

Vince Rodriguez, who was both head of Studio 23 News and Ressa’s executive assistant during her first year at ABS-CBN said: “What Maria did was give the news group back its credibility. But it goes beyond the Standards and Ethics Manual. She showed she would not tolerate corruption in any form. She eliminated gray areas but she allowed people to debate and discuss ethical issues they were unsure of because she had an open door policy.”

Another ABS-CBN employee added that Ressa made herself accessible by literally keeping the door to her office open.

Outside ABS-CBN, Vergel Santos, chairman of the Editorial Board for BusinessWorld, observed that, “Her reputation alone made the network look instantly more credible. And the credibility she lent to it became in time its own.” But Santos also said, "Now, again, how she has effected, if at all she has, local journalistic practices and standards is a point itself too presumptuous, even patronizing, to raise."

Ressa ardently defends media freedom. Recently, Ressa advocated against restrictive legislation for the press at a Senate inquiry into the role of media in the bungled August 23 hostage incident, which was aired live and internationally. When Senator Joker Arroyo asked media to help draw a line to serve its interests and the "national interest," Ressa pointed out that freedom of expression as “enshrined by the constitution” is in the national interest as “one of the key goals of our country."

At the hearing, Ressa was specifically targeted for putting the quality of President Aquino’s leadership on the line in an article she wrote for the Wall Street Journal titled, “Noynoy Flunks his First Test.” In response to that criticism, Ressa stated: “Journalism, ethics and freedom of speech are universal. There is no conflict of interest between a journalist inside the Philippines (and outside)…. Journalists only convey the events that happen. In fact, I can tell you, I wrote that article with the intent of constructively criticizing and hoping for better action from the government.”

The editor of the Wall Street Journal Asia’s editorial page, Mary Kissel, stressed that Noynoy Aquino explicitly ran for office on the promise of transparency and accountability, and that journalism, as an independent watchdog for government, is one of the only institutions in the Philippines that can help the administration achieve that goal. For Kissel, the article was a success because it stimulated debate across the board.

Maria Ressa’s brand of journalism

In the Storyline interview, Ressa said, “You can’t just give isolated facts without context because people get confused, and who else will say it so, you go fact, fact, fact, this will support this. I even know, working for CNN, it is impossible to be objective.”

Chi Almario, ABS-CBN's head of newsgathering, spoke about Ressa as someone who unabashedly stands her ground. One ABS-CBN employee described Ressa as combative in a Western way.

But for Armand Sol, the head of editing Operations at ABS-CBN, Ressa has a straightforward American approach to doing work, and the warm personal touch of a Filipina. According to Sol, Ressa would not speak badly about people behind their backs and never took arguments personally.

On Storyline, Ressa said, “We (ABS-CBN News) are confrontational. We are aggressive. That’s the direction we want to be. We want to hold you accountable.”

Almario explained, “As a journalist you can’t back away from confrontation. You always have to be in the fighting mode. Hesitation could be mistaken as cowardice. We can’t afford to be timid. She knows people are watching and she has to lead because that is the ABS brand- we’re fearless.”

Two mediamen outside ABS-CBN, Vergel Santos and Luis Teodoro, deputy director of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) said they disagreed with certain things that were done during Maria’s stewardship. But both independently observed general improvements in the network's coverage during the past 6 years.

Despite Ressa’s media freedom defense, Teodoro took issue with the ethical choices networks and executives made in covering the August 23rd hostage incident. He said, “I don’t think it’s Maria alone but I think it’s because the networks are locked in a struggle for ratings. So they are driven to take shortcuts.”

Nevertheless, Teodoro emphasized that the CMFR saw improved coverage of the 2007 and 2010 elections from ABS-CBN. Monitoring the 2004 national elections, Teodoro noticed that coverage was reactive, the reporters were not well prepared and the reporting tended to be repeated. But in 2007, he saw reporters demanding candidates to focus on the issues. Whereas previously, he observed public affairs programs being held later and later in the evening, under Ressa, discourse about the elections moved to primetime.

Teodoro said, “We attributed this (improved election coverage) to the direction of Maria Ressa. In the last election, 2010, the same things were going on but it was even better. The networks were sponsoring forums and debates, which improved the dialogue and discourse.”

Santos said, “I have observed that, in her stewardship, the discussion of public issues on the network has widened and to some degree deepened and that reporting itself has acquired some depth - has shown to have gone further into the whys and wherefores of the news. The network seems to me also to have been more open about itself, thus inspiring openness in the industry itself, which I think a critical ethical and self-policing development.”

The Next Change

Ging Reyes, ABS-CBN’s North American bureau chief for the past 8 years will take over for Ressa. For the past 2 weeks, Reyes and Ressa have worked in side by side offices to facilitate a smooth transition.

Even after Ressa’s departure, ABS-CBN News’ professional relationships in the broadcast industry will likely remain the same. The executive director of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Reynaldo Hulog, said, “It may be hard to fill her shoes. However, we do not think that the KBP's relationship with ABS-CBN will change. ABS-CBN has always tried to maintain its good standing in the association -- not to mention, the broadcast industry.”

For his part, Teodoro said, “There are more factors in the way the media will turn out than one person. Although as far as ABS-CBN was concerned, Maria did a lot of positive things.”

Ressa said on Storyline, “I think the next phase now is combining all of the different initiatives that we’ve put together-- the citizen journalism, our editorial perspective and public service, that’s where it needs to go. But perhaps, that’s not where ABS wants to go now.” She added, “Perhaps really, it’s time to allow someone else with new ideas to come and test whether my ideas are right. Even look at the changes that will happen when I go, who’s to say they’re not right?”

Ressa has yet to disclose what change is next for her.

She ended the Storyline special by saying, “I don’t know if I’ll be alive for the next 20 years. But you know, in 1986, I said I think the Philippines is going to be amazing 20 years from now. It didn’t happen but I do hope that in my lifetime, I will see a much greater improvement in the quality of life, governance and of our own democracy. And I will do all I can to empower this coming generation.”
