Cinema One: A Toast for Philippine Cinema

If its name means one for Juan dela Cruz cinema, then Cinema One has been living up to it with flying colors. It has acquired movies from film productions such as Star Cinema, FPJ, RVQ and Regal Films. Cinema One is an advocate of Philippine Cinema for the consumption and appreciation of Pinoys out there who are also acquainted with Hollywood.

Recently, Cinema One put the spotlight on Regal Films’ White House as featured movie in the channel’s Sine Sindak sa Enchanted Kingdom. The Halloween outdoor screening treated Cinema One guests and theme park visitors to Topel Lee’s cinematic scare tactics and engaging storytelling. Everybody journeyed with Gabby Concepcion, the movie’s lead in search for the soul of his daughter snatched by the Black Lady (Iza Calzado). Often, one found oneself at the edge of the seat as Topel set the eerie mood with his visuals and sounds.

But what makes Cinema One unique is its annual competition Cinema One Originals which was promoted in Sine Sindak. For the past six years, it has given new filmmakers the chance to tell Pinoy stories in an unconventional way. Many think indie/digital cinema is the new face and future of Philippine cinema. Cinema One is in the forefront.

“The main objective is for Cinema One to create its own movies offering something different to moviegoers (as compared to mainstream),” says channel head Ronald Arguelles of Cinema One Originals. “Studios do the same (type of movies) and there has to be a variety. (Cinema One Originals) also gives new talents the opportunity they need.”

Cinema One channel head Ronald Arguelles“For the past years, we have given the audience different movies. They are not just the typical romantic comedies. We have horror movies but are unique and different. Cinema One has also been recognized in film festivals abroad.”

Cinema One movies speak for themselves. They have “crossed boundaries” in what story to tell and how to tell it. It has proven that digital cinema is evolving.

What are Cinema One Originals plans next year?

“We aim to do 10 films
and to have a sharing agreement (with filmmakers),” answers Arguelles. “This is (to) excite them that they will have ownership with the movies.”

Before they watched White House, John Lapus and Tuesday Vargas hosted a pre-screening show with games. Pilipinas Got Talent finalist Markki Stroem serenaded the crowd while White House stars Jairus Aquino and Joem Bascon invited guests to watch the movie in theaters.

Early in the afternoon, Sine Sindak participants toured Enchanted Kingdom and tried some rides. Some went to Grand Carousel, Flying Fiesta and Bump n’ Splash. Others opted for Rialto Theater, Rio Grande Rapids, Jungle Log Jam, Anchors Away and Space Shuttle Max. Anchors Away and Space Shuttle gave everyone the heads up for the night’s good scare White House.

This is Cinema One’s very original trick or treat.

Martin del Rosario: The Next Big Leading Man

So far, 2010 has been a year of firsts for up-and-coming young actor Martin del Rosario. He starred in two movies and was nominated for an acting award.

Del Rosario’s first television appearance for ABS-CBN was in the youth-oriented show “Abt Ur Luv.” After that, he played Boy Ramirez, the younger brother of Roxanne Guinoo’s character Gillian in “Sineserye Presents: Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos.” He has also appeared in “Iisa Pa Lamang,” “Your Song Presents: Boystown,” “May Bukas Pa,” “Katorse,” “Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal?” and “Rosalka.”

Del Rosario performed well in all of those shows, but it was his appearances on the long-running drama series “Maalaala Mo Kaya” that made critics and fans alike sit up and take notice of him.

In an MMK episode titled “Headband,” he played a gay teenager named Solomon, who changed his name to Samantha upon coming out of the closet. He did it so well that the Philippine Movie Press Club saw fit to add him to their list of nominees for the Best Single Performance by an Actor plum.

Actually, that isn’t the only award Del Rosario is up for this year. His movie “Dagim” is an entry to the Cinema One Originals film festival, so he’s also eligible for an acting award there.

He has some pretty heavy-hitting competition for both awards.

In the PMPC Star Awards for TV, his competition includes Dominic Ochoa, Gerald Anderson, Jolo Revilla and Ronaldo Valdez, to name a few. In the Cinema One Originals film festival, Del Rosario’s fellow nominees include Mark Gil and Pen Medina.

When asked how he feels about his chances of winning, he said he feels blessed to be in such good company—and for now, that’s enough for him.

Aside from “Dagim,” he is also in Star Cinema’s “Till My Heartaches End” with Kim Chiu and Anderson. Del Rosario and Anderson are being co-managed by Star Magic and Jun Reyes.

“Idol ko si Gerald, pero not to the point na gusto ko siyang gayahin. Inspiration ko lang siya. Mabait siya. Simple person, walang yabang,” he said.

Del Rosario added that while he wants to be a leading man someday, he’s in no rush and is willing to do what it takes for the next few years to make it happen.

Rey Valera Not Leaving Pilipinas Win na Win!

Ace Director Rory Quintos Dengue-Stricken

Director Rory Quintos has been brought to a hospital due to dengue.

“She has to reach a minimum of 30thou sa platelet count niya for her to be declared recovering from dengue. Nasa 22 thou pa lang. Please continue to pray kasi may bleeding pa siya,” Star Cinema’s Malou Santos told ABS-CBN News.

The director of the “Land Down Under” is confined at St. Luke’s Hospital.

She reportedly underwent blood transfusion after her platelets dropped to dangerous levels.

Coco Martin Turns 30

On a day when most find themselves remembering their dead loved ones, actor Coco Martin celebrates his life and adds another year to it at that.

The award-winning actor refused to divulge just how many candles will be on his cake this All Saints' Day, but he said his celebrations do not get weathered down because of the traditions that also mark this day.

Martin said he has little to wish for this 2010 after another successful professional year for the young actor, whose talent has drawn recognition from local and international audiences.

Recently, Martin learned that his movie, “Noy,” which he also co-produced, will represent the country to the 2011 Oscars.

Two weeks from now, Martin will head to Los Angeles to begin promoting the Filipino film.

But before he sets his sights on Hollywood, he took on a challenging role for “Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK).”

In the next MMK episode, Martin portrays a mentally challenged man who witnesses a crime.

In addition to the aesthetic changes Martin underwent, he also admitted that it was one of his more difficult roles to date.

Born Rodel Nacianceno, Martin started in showbiz as part of Star Circle.

His first film appearance was "Luv TXT," with Judy Ann Santos as the lead star, in 2001. After taking a break, Martin made his debut film "Masahista," which won him the Best Actor Award from the Young Critics Circle in 2006.

He made TV shows in other networks before returning to ABS-CBN in 2008.

He became part of afternoon series "Ligaw na Bulaklak."

His major break came after he was given a role in "Tayong Dalawa." His performance in the TV series earned him the Best Drama Actor award in the 2009 Star Awards for Television.

He also starred in afternoon series "Nagsimula sa Puso" with Maja Salvador.

This year, Martin became part of Kapamilya's primetime drama "Kung Tayo'y Magkakalayo" as well as "Tonyong Bayawak."

He also did his first mainstream movie "Sa 'Yo Lamang" under Star Cinema, and was part of ABS-CBN's first musical series "Idol."

Barangay Election and the World of the Dead on Patrol ng Pilipino

Sol Aragones and Dominic Almelor expose the world of Barangay Elections and the unwanted dead.

Sol Aragones saw different stories develop as she followed the recent Barangay Elections in Payatas precincts for 12 straight hours. Fellow reporter Dominic Almelor, meanwhile, unearthed horrifying stories on unclaimed bodies in morgues.

Find out the truth behind the news as they reveal the complete details of their reports this Tuesday (Nov 2) in “Patrol ng Pilipino” on ABS-CBN.

“Tiring but fulfilling,” that’s how Sol Aragones describes life as a reporter. When assigned to report on breaking news, this usually means that she has to work for long hours and even battle with fatigue and lack of sleep. And while battling with these, she needs to stay on top of her coverage – alert and ready for anything and everything that may happen around her.

But despite all the challenges that her job entails, it is her passion and dedication to her profession that continues to drive her. For her, there’s nothing quite like being able to give the public important information that they need to know.

Like Sol, reporter Dominic Almelor also gets to see and witness many different kinds of stories. Sometimes, these stories are even hard to watch because of their sensitive nature.

Last All Soul’s Day, Dominic was assigned to find out what happens to unclaimed dead bodies – corpses that have been left at morgues with no relatives claiming responsibility for their burial.

Join Dominic as he explores the “world of the dead” and Sol as she shows you the heat of election action. Watch as they bring you a behind-the-scenes and in-depth look at these stories in “Patrol ng Pilipino” after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

On Spotlight: Dave Jonathan Lamar

Co-managed by Cornerstone Talent Management Center and Star Magic, Dave Jonathan Lamar, or simply DJ, is the younger of the Lamars brothers who was once part of the musical-serye Idol. Born and raised in Sariaya, Quezon, this Fil-American cutie led a sheltered life since both his parents are dedicated missionaries who run their own orphanage. In a recent interview with ABS-CBN.com, DJ further shared that he was really culture-shocked when he first came here in Quezon City to try out his luck in the music scene.

“I didn’t grow up in a rich family kaya the perception of the members of the press that we were born with a silver spoon in our mouth, that’s quite the farthest thing to describe our status in life. I wouldn’t say naman na we're poor, just average. But in our first couple of gigs, wala kaming mgadamit. Kasi back in Lucena puro bigay lang ng lola namin and cousins from the States ang suot namin. We don’t really have a cable TV in the house. we only watch movies. We don’t really watch local or international channels,” said DJ who got discovered while performing in a Christian church in Alabang.

Although he had the chance to live in the States for a few years, DJ stressed that his parents taught them live as simply as possible. This charming 16-year-old also claimed that he only hangs out with wholesome kids who are not really into parties to begin with. “Kaya nga the first time that I entered a bar for a gig, I wasn’t used to the smoke and the environment. It took a while for me and my brother Micah to get used to it. Since our parents our missionaries, we're together 24/7. We just play with the kids and take care of them as well.”

Once you’ve hear the Lamars perform on stage though, you will realize that they really deserve a break in the music industry. Not only are they talented singers but DJ, specifically, has actually written around fifty original compositions to boot. “When I first submitted songs for MCA Music, they told me to write more songs that fit my age bracket. I am the kind of writer that can draw inspiration from other people’s experiences. I wrote a song called Desperate For Love when I was 16 and it was inspired by the kids from our orphanage. They know about the feelings of anger, disappointment, bitterness pero ‘di nila alam yung love. So parang masyadong serious yung songs ko but now I’ve already made some that I hope would be included in our upcoming album.”

Joining Idol was something DJ did because getting TV exposure will help establish their singing career. But he’s also grateful because it gave him the opportunity to meet his celebrity crush Sarah Geronimo. “She’s the most down-to-earth person I’ve ever met in showbiz. I like the fact that she dresses very simply. It’s different seeing her on TV because she's so much more beautiful in person. And then there was one scene where we were just goofing around off cam. When we went back to work, the director said, ‘Sarah, iyak’ may tumulo na luha agad sa cheek niya. Grabe hindi ko kaya yun. She’s really a very special girl,” he finally stated.

Sarah Geronimo's 3 Years With Magic Sing

Sarah Geronimo has had a love affair for the past three years now. But it's not with a man, we assure you, but with Magic Sing, solely distributed in the country by the Astra Group, Inc. which renewed recently the pop star's endorsement of the product.

During the signing ceremonies, Astra Chairman and President Eric D. Singson told guests that ''Our company considers Sarah Geronimo as the perfect endorser for the Magic Sing brand. We love her class and wholesome public image, which in spite of her fantastic popularity and success both as a singer and an actress, she remained unsullied. Sarah's qualities as a person perfectly exemplify Magic Sing's own emphasis on class, high quality, style, and product integrity.''

Vivian Velez Criticized Marian Rivera's Acting and Praised Angel Locsin and ABS-CBN

Nag-aral din ako ng filmmaking for two years.

"Not for anything else, I don't want to hurt anyone.

Sabi ko, I have to prove myself. I think that's the way any other actress or any other actor should take it.

"Talagang masasabi ko na I am so lucky to be working with these people. It's because of them—especially, Angel.

"Parang this project came at the right time. Lahat talaga perfect for me.

"'Saka alam ko, from the start when it was offered to me, alam ko na maghi-hit siya, kasi nandun lahat ng right ingredients. Nandun lahat.

"But my husband was telling me na 'wag lang akong magkakasakit.

"Well, he's the one who advised me na siguradong this will be a successful show, and he was right, and I was right also," sabi pa ni Vivian.

"Alam mo, depende talaga yun. Depende sa project. But, so far kasi, ang ganda ng trato sa akin ng ABS. Ang sarap nilang katrabaho. Talagang napaka-supportive nila, from the management...lahat!

"I think the ABS management kasi take it seriously na ang isang artista nila, hindi lang dapat sikat o maganda.

"KC can likewise be assured she has the full and enthusiastic backing of ABS-CBN and her Star Magic family of artists. We are all grateful for her trust and confidence."

"And we wish to extend our appreciation to Ms. Sandra Chavez and Ms. Shirley Kuan who have generously extended their full cooperation in making the transition smooth and cordial."

"We now wish for KC to further bloom into a finer actress and entertainer and a personality worthy of admiration by a very discriminating public."

KC Concepcion Now Officially With Star Magic!

"Actually, I want to start really by saying that I'm so thankful to Tita Sandra Chavez and to Tita Shirley Kuan.

"With Tita Sandra, mas matagal ang samahan namin. When I was 16, nag-start ako doing commercials, kung naalala ninyo.

And na-launch ako dito. So, Tita Sandra, you know that my family love you so much.

"And maganda yung usapan namin ni Tita Sandra and pati rin ni Tita Shirley, actually. I will forever be grateful for your help in the last nine years.

"Si Tita Shirley has always been there. Even nung hindi pa kami officially magkasama, she was always there to help me.

"So, kay Tita Shirley naman, I truly, truly love Tita Shirley. Alam ng mga tao yan. Lagi akong may magandang sinasabi about yung business tactics niya, na sobra akong maraming natutunan sa kanya.

"Tita SK, you know that you and I... you are special to me. I'm really excited also, I know you're supportive of all the things that I really want to do dito sa industriya.

"Marami nang lumabas but I really like to say na happy ako na tahimik naman kaming naghiwalay.

"I will forever be grateful talaga kay Tita Sandra and Tita Shirley, na have really taught me so much.

"And in terms of starting this way with Star Magic, ang ganda-ganda ng sinabi ni Mr. M sa statement nila.

"Mr. M, thank you for accepting me and the Star Magic family, including the Star Magic artists like sina Tin [Kristine Hermosa], Kimerald [Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson].

"Nag-text sila ng welcome sa akin. Including din sina Shaina [Magdayao] and John Lloyd [Cruz].

"Si Bea [Alonzo], tumawag din kay Tita Mariole [Alberto, head of Star Magic] to say that I was welcome.

"Si Angelica [Panganiban]. Of course, si PJ [Piolo Pascual] and Sam [Milby].

"So, I think, more than anything it's gonna be exciting to be part of a big family, kung saan mas marami pa akong mararanasan.

"But that's really something that I love about being in showbiz, kung sinu-sino ang nakikilala mo!

"So, with Star Magic, I know that I'll be supported... that I'll be more inspired to work.

"To Mr. M and Tita Mariole and to my ABS-CBN family, thank you for accepting me.

So, sana mas makilala pa nila ako."

May dagdag-paliwanag pa si KC sa nararanasan niyang pagbabago ngayon.

"At saka, di ba, yung sinasabi nila, 'When things seem to be falling apart, everything actually is falling into place.' Huwag n'yong ire-resist yung change."
