Nonoy Zuñiga on Pilipinas Win na Win

“The slowest balladeer,” goes the joke of Rico J. Puno to his co-Hitmaker Nonoy Zuñiga, who is always made fun of for walking slowly. But far-off to the knowledge of many, Nonoy, one of the much-talked-about hosts of Pilipinas Win Na Win is a doctor. He, however, was not able to practice his profession which he would like to call more as a vocation. Obviously, Nonoy, who is now considered a legend, became very successful in his singing career. But if an emergency comes, Nonoy said he is willing to practice his medical skills especially to the “aging” Hitmakers.

“Safe na safe ang audience sa studio dahil andito ako. Lalo na si Rico J na pinakamatanda sa aming lahat. Hahaha!,” patawang pahayag ni Nonoy.

The veteran singer also admitted he made a lot of adjustments for his daily noontime show. He said his new job has gradually changed his lifestyle as he now reports to ABS-CBN daily.

“Very exciting and I’m learning a lot too—in terms of adjustments sa new schedule, sa mga songs. Ang dami talagang pag-aaralan. Lalo na I’m very new sa hosting ng isang afternoon show,” ani Nonoy

When Nonoy was asked if what can he still do for to better improve the noontime show, he said: “I’m really enjoying PWNW. But for me, I have to be more energetic, ‘yun talaga ang kulang ko pa. Even in my shows, hindi naman talaga ako yung hyper na tao. I’m more relaxed. The energy level here is really different. Kaya ngayon natututo na ako.”

Among all PWNW hosts, Nonoy is the most health conscious. In fact, he always follow a strict diet and not to mention the vitamins and food supplements he takes.

“In terms of food intake, conscious talaga ako. Ever since naman, I choose the food I take. Usually, vegetables lang and fish. Sa family kasi namin, both mother and father side, may history talaga ng major illnesses like cancer, hypertension, heart and liver diseases. Kaya I need to take care of my health. Baka kasi kapag na-trigger yung mga genes kung ganun, magkakasakit ako,” said Nonoy

Nonoy also revealed his life’s theme song (Theme Song ng Buhay). “I’ll Never Say Goodbye ang theme song ng buhay ko. It’s actually a love song but you can relate it to a lot of wonderful things.”

It can be recalled that during the pilot episode of PWNW, Nonoy’s I’ll Never Say Goodbye became the finale production song of the Hitmakers.

When asked who among the young singers can be the next Nonoy Zuñiga, he immediately said it’s Jed Madela. “Sa tingin ko siya ‘yun dahil sa istilo niya at dahil pareho kaming galing sa banda. Iba kasi ang training sa banda, yung pumwesto. Maraming alam na piesa yan at nakaharap na sa iba’t-ibang klase ng tao.”

Besides the personal success he currently has, Nonoy is also grateful for PWNW for it has become more competitive in noontime block of the TV ratings game. He said they are truly indebted to ABS-CBN management who gave them a chance. Nonoy would also like to thank the people for the heartwarming acceptance to the Hitmakers.

“I feel very, very happy considering that first time naming together to host a noontime show. We never imagined that we would have a project like this,” said Nonoy.

Derek Ramsay on Ending Magkaribal

As the hot primetime series Magkaribal goes on its last two weeks, Derek Ramsay says their work schedule has gotten even more hectic with the scenes getting even more exciting before the climactic final episode. “Tuloy-tuloy yung trabaho ngayon. Right now were really working hard to keep the quality there, taping everyday so it takes a toll on our body. No exaggeration, we tape everyday and that’s why sometimes the emotions get high and the tempers flare, which is just normal. But it’s hard work everyday and I’m not talking about 8 to 10 hour days, I’m talking about 24 plus, plus hours working straight. I have mixed emotions right now. It’s sad because I’m going to miss all the people that I’m working with. But at the same time, my body is longing for rest,” he said.

Derek also admitted that he really enjoyed working with leading ladies Gretchen Barretto and Bea Alonzo as well as the rest of the cast in the show. “I feel sad that this great ride is going to come to an end. I don’t know if I’m going to get the chance to work with these people again. I’m so used to seeing them everyday. You know I wake up and the first people I see, and that’s all going to change in a couple of week’s time,” he says during Push.com.ph’s visit on the set of Magkaribal last October 20.

But of all his co-stars on the hit show, the Fil-Brit hunk admits it’s Bea whom he looks forward to being paired with again in a future project. “If given a chance, I’d like to work with all of them again, but it’s always a pleasure to work with Bea. I feel so comfortable with Bea. And ang mami-miss ko sa kanya is yung pang-aalaska. I always tease her kasi. I love teasing Bea about anything, just to get on her nerves. Pikon siya eh. Mami-miss ko yung kulitan namin dito sa set,” he said.

Derek also admitted that his friendship with his other leading lady Gretchen has also grown over the past few months of working together. “I’ve gotten close to Gretchen and I’d like to maybe do a movie with her. What I will miss most about Gretchen is how she’s so funny, she makes me laugh. She’s so magaang, magaan syang kasama. And then maalagain siya, she always has food, she’s always asking if you’re hungry. Sobrang bait niya to everybody. And there’s definitely some sort of chemistry there when we do scenes together. But I feel real comfortable working with Bea so sana I get to work with her again,” he admitted.

Derek also shared that everyone in the cast of Magkaribal has become friends. “Actually, everyone’s gotten close. We don’t only hang out sa set, we will hang out outside of the set. Sila R.S. (Francisco), sila Toffee (Calma), sila Erich (Gonzales) at Enchong (Dee). We’ve all become very, very close. Everyday kaming nagsasama-sama pero we also find time para magsama-sama and hang out outside of taping. I had my Belo launching and sinuportahan ako ng mga kasama ko dito. It’s nice that we created a bond between everybody here. More than just workmates, we’ve become real friends dito sa showbiz,” he said.

Angel Aquino on Formed Friendships in Magkaribal

While viewers can’t help but be affected by the increasing tension among the characters in Magkaribal, Push.com.ph found the easy camaraderie between Angel Aquino and Gretchen Barretto a nice surprise during a set visit at One Esplanade last Wednesday night, October 20. In fact, Angel revealed that their closeness has reached the point where Gretchen has opened up about her personal life and even her colorful past. “I feel really honored because I don’t think somebody just easily tells you about those things. For me it’s something that I really have to take care of kasi trust is something you earn and it’s not just given to you.”

Angel further shared that Gretchen has inspired her to be a risk-taker knowing that the latter has experienced a lot of difficulties in life yet she still managed to be optimistic and stronger than ever. “Parang, ‘Wow! You really did all that? You went through all that?’ Parang ang tapang tapang niya. She's such a gutsy and adventurous person kaya every time she tells me her story I always ask myself, ‘Kaya ko ba gawin yun?’ Hindi ako ganon katapang katulad niya. I admire her for that. Hands down ako kay Gretchen. We’ve also gone out together. Nag-enjoy na kami ng magkakasama that goes beyond our roles and duties as actors and actresses dito sa set. Siguro we’re such happy people kaya we really connect.”

Bea Alonzo is another person whom Angel really got close to on Magkaribal. “I’ve realized na si Bea, she’s such a deep person. She talks about life, relationships, books. She's very intellectual and a person who has a very sensitive heart. I just don’t want to tell her pero parang nakikita ko yung sarili ko sa kanya. The way she takes care of her family, the way she plans her whole future, wala siyang iniiwanan. And also the way she talks about how she is in a relationship, sabi ko, ‘Oh my God! She's so much like me.’ Alam mo yung parang gusto mo siya alagaan? You really want to guide her to whatever she goes through in life.”

No TRO vs. Willie Revillame

A Quezon City judge set aside on Friday ABS-CBN's motion for a temporary restraining order (TRO) stopping the airing of TV host Willie Revillame's new show on rival station TV5.

In his ruling, Judge Luisito Cortez of Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 84 said ABS-CBN "failed to discharge the burden of proving that there exists an urgent need for the issuance of a TRO to prevent great or irreparable injury that it might suffer."

The judge also junked Revillame's motion to dismiss a P486 million damage suit filed against him by the network.

Cortez ordered the TV host to post P426 million million bond for any damage incurred by ABS-CBN by the airing of Revillame's show on a different network before October 27.

Both parties were barred from airing any comment on the case.

The judge also ordered ABS-CBN and Revillame to enter a mediation process starting November. Cortez has scheduled the next hearing of the case on Dec. 10, 2010.

According to a paid advertisement in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Friday, the maiden show of "Willing Willie" will start on October 23, 5 p.m. over TV5, which is now owned by Manny V. Pangilinan.

ABS-CBN prexy sad over judge's move

In a statement issued after Cortez set aside ABS-CBN's motion, Charo Santos-Concio, president of ABS-CBN, went on air over TV Patrol and said she was saddened that the court did not grant the company's petition for a TRO.

She said:

"Mga Kapamilya, ang ginawa po ni Willie ay isang paglabag sa kanyang kontratang pinirmahan sa ABS-CBN na magtatapos pa sa isang taon. Ang hangarin lang namin ay tuparin sana ni Willie ang kanyang obligasyon sa kanyang kontrata. Hindi po ba mahalaga na ipinaiiral natin ang paggalang sa mga kontrata.

"Kaya po nalulungkot kami na hindi nabigyan ng TRO ang ABS-CBN laban kay Willie Revillame.

"Huwag sana natin kalimutan na ang lahat ng ito ay nag-ugat sa walang galang niyang paghamon at pagbabanta sa ABS-CBN management.

"Naniniwala kami na mananaig ang katarungan at ang buong katotohanan. Patuloy namin ipaglalaban ang aming karapatan."

Tit for tat

Revillame earlier filed an P11-million damage suit against ABS-CBN last September 21 and asked the court for judicial confirmation that his 3-year contract with the TV network had been rescinded. The network, in turn, filed a P486 million counter-suit against the TV host.

Revillame entered into a contract with ABS-CBN to host the noontime show "Wowowee" in September 2008. His contract is valid for a period of 3 years.

Last May 25, the TV station suspended and placed Revillame under probation after he publicly asked the network to sack talent and showbiz reporter Jobert Sucaldito for allegedly maligning “Wowowee” guests on the latter’s radio program.

The management eventually pulled the plug on "Wowowee," prompting Revillame to unilaterally end his contract. ABS-CBN has refused to release Revillame from his contract obligations.

The company had argued that Revillame committed serious violations of their agreement, which, among others, include taking an unauthorized leave of absence from "Wowowee" and refusing to perform his obligation as talent.

ABS-CBN also cited Revillame's remarks on the cortege video of late President Corazon Aquino, his public disclosure of his rift with Sucaldito, and appearance on a television show of rival network TV5 as violations of his contract.

ABS-CBN warned that rival networks that will enter into an agreement with Revillame will be liable for the same amount of liquidated damages "as a joint tortfeasor under the rules on quasi-delicts and tortious interference."

Gretchen Barretto on Ending Magkaribal

Actress Gretchen Barretto was teary eyed as she confirmed her character Victoria Valera in “Magkaribal” will be saying goodbye soon.

The top rating drama series will be ending in about 2 weeks' time.

Barretto confessed that in the 6 months that "Magkaribal" aired, she learned a lot from her co-stars.

Among them is the act of “pakikipagkapwa-tao” which she saw from the character of Victoria’s rival, Gelai Agustin, portrayed by actress Bea Alonzo.

Furthermore, Barretto said she never expected that she and hunk actor Derek Ramsay, her co-star in the series, would get close to each other. She, however, declared she and Ramsay’s actress girlfriend Angelica Panganiban will even get closer especially since their project together will push through.

“Mabait na tao si Angelica,” Barretto said.

The two women earlier figured a word war when Barretto said in a television interview that she wanted to see Ramsay’s solo pictures after his trip to South Africa. This irritated Panganiban, who was with Ramsay on the trip.
