This is the article written by Armida Siguion-Reyna on her column No Holds Barred in Daily Tribune about Willie Revillame:
SPOT.PH, one of the more interesting Web sites that’s been pointed out to me by family members who know I wouldn’t know how to surf the Internet on my own, has put out a 10-item list that may help us to understand Willie Revillame.
Those out of the loop will ask: Who is this Revillame guy and why is there need to know him? Only because he’s dared buck ABS-CBN, the giant TV network that gave him his break well into the job that paid as much as anywhere from P30 million to P45 million a month, thus affording him his four mansions, two yachts, and many other etceteras, including a luxury car of dubious ownership, or so he said when the car’s tax papers were questioned.
So we’re informed that he started as a sidekick, and of sidekicks, there are those happy to be so, and “those who aspire to be the main man.” That he’s “a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks” “grew up poor… reportedly took on odd jobs as a jeepney maintenance boy and a barker… probably explains why he has surrounded himself with the best things that money can buy. That he’s an Aquarian, born Jan. 27 and therefore “expected” to be “friendly and humanitarian,” as well as “contrary, perverse and unpredictable.”
That he’s “not afraid to look stupid… Whether it’s a calculated move or instinctive…” and is a Metal Rat “likely to be idealistic and intensely emotional” but could “cover up the intensity of his feelings by presenting himself as a happy and charming person, even though he is easily moved to jealousy, anger and selfishness.”
That he’s “a serious collector,” hence what he’s so far bought, no matter how expensive, including a residential property once owned and lived in by ABS-CBN chairman Gabby Lopez, with an explanation of “hoarding” is a fear-based activity, “that stems from an individual’s past history of experiences” that may have left them feeling that they didn’t have enough, or that they were in severe danger at one time and now crave security.
Also, that he’s got “commitment issues,” else why his two failed marriages and roster of unsuccessful relationships? But still, hey, that he’s well-loved by the masa, who “didn’t use him as a scapegoat for the Feb. 4, 2006 Wowowee stampede at the Ultra, where 74 persons died. To many of his fans, Revillame will always be one heck of an entertaining ‘savior.’”
Finally, that “He wants to dip his finger in every slice of the pie” so aside from what he’s bought he “has a scent named after him, endorses a clothing line, and hawks high-end watches,” and then even his own Wil Tower Mall, to be put up well within sniffing distance of the network he’s recently parted ways with.
Knowing all these, I still don’t get him. Reading about what else he’s said about ABS-CBN, I still don’t get him. Even from our first encounter, I never got him.
It was under my term as chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board that the MTRCB first chided Revillame and co-hosts Randy Santiago and John Estrada for their overboard-naughty and overtly salacious quips directed at female contestants’ physical assets in their daily noontime show Magandang Tanghali Bayan. The board suspended the program for 20 days, the first time such a punishment had ever been meted out on a live TV show in the country, as again, it was also the first time that the regulating body’s warnings were repeatedly ignored.
ABS-CBN appealed our decision, but pending the outcome, Revillame called my son, Carlitos, to request for a meeting with me, claiming that “Kung ako lang ito, hindi na ako makikipag-meeting kay Tita Midz, pero naaawa ako kay Gabby (Lopez). Nagpunta siya sa bahay ko, umiiyak, lumuhod at nakiusap na ako na raw ang humarap kay Tita Midz para mag-airing na uli show namin.”
How Revillame made up the story, I do not know. Why I knew it was made up had little to do with personal encounters with the ABS-CBN top honcho from way back when he was a young boy, as it had to do with pure instincts. Network bosses just don’t kneel, especially one who’s not merely boss, but also member of the family that owns the network. And there lies Revillame’s rub, his capacity to make mountains out of molehills, to make something out of nothing, to imagine wrongs actually not committed against him, and imagining thus think the world to be out against him.
Sayang.
So it’s true that ABS-CBN had met with him to discuss his return to the noontime slot he’s made his, last July 31. So it’s true that in meetings held about that return, he’d made suggestions for new games, for new segments, all to “improve” Wowowee.
And yes, it’s true that ABS-CBN instead came up with Pilipinas Win na Win, featuring new hosts Kris Aquino and Robin Padilla, with Pokwang, Valerie Concepcion and Mariel Rodriguez and a bevy more of others to apparently replace Wowowee and at the same time offered Revillame another show on cable TV Studio 23, only one-hour long, and pre-recorded to boot.
Is it correct for Willie to ask for the cancellation of his contract?
ABS-CBN doesn’t think so.
I am not so enamored with the media giant that went to great lengths to ensure the defeat of former President Joseph Estrada’s return to Malacañang by way of TV docus presenting him short of incompetent and nothing but a womanizer. But in this case I believe it right, when it maintains that Revillame “violated the behavioral provisions of his contract when he threatened the ABS-CBN management during the May 4, 2010 episode of Wowowee, with a resignation if management does not fire another artist of the network. His behavior was generally seen as a display of disrespect and arrogance, completely unacceptable to the Filipino public.
“As the one who violated his contract, Willie has no right to have it unilaterally invalidated. Contracts are binding agreements that must be respected by the contracting parties involved. The one who violates the contract cannot be allowed to dictate whether it should continue or end. Otherwise, contracts will have no value and may be terminated based on whim.
“ABS-CBN is the aggrieved party, and as such, is the only one that can decide to end the agreement.
“Despite all that had happened, ABS-CBN was willing to continue with the contract. Willie however, refused to take responsibility for his actions.
“ABS-CBN wishes to reiterate that it will hold Willie to his obligations under the contract which expires September 2011.”
Meanwhile, the latest from Revillame: “Ipinapangako ko, hindi matatapos ang taong ito, magkikita tayo araw-araw.”
Meaning, what? He’ll have a new show even before the courts decide whether he’s free or not to go on to another pasture? TV5 has issued an outright denial, it will not be the venue of the Revillame comeback.
Is this how the cookie crumbles? Abangan ang susunod na kabanata.
