Sid Lucero on MMK

Known for his dramatic prowess both in mainstream entertainment and the indie scene, Sid Lucero takes on the role of Antonio, a 28-year-old massage therapist in the July 17 episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya. Sid is one of the best young actors today known for his appearance in a number of critically-acclaimed indie films. He was last seen on the musical “Emir.” He also stars in the Cinemalaya-NETPAC entry “Muli” opposite Cogie Domingo.

Antonio is forced to offer “extra service” to his clients in order to earn more money for the sake of his daughter April who is diagnosed with a serious illness. Homophobic as he is, he is left with little choice on how to make sure his daughter gets what she needs. What happens then once he learns that April is not his real daughter? Will he hate himself for shouldering a responsibility for which he has sacrificed so much?

Don’t miss how Sid brings to life this heartbreaking tale of unconditional love and self-discovery. Joining him is Francine Prieto, who is a revelation in terms of heavy drama, on her first MMK appearance, together with Phoebe Arbotante, and William Lorenzo. Dado Lumibao directs this very special and controversial episode.

On Spotlight: JM de Guzman of Midnight Phantom

Newbie actor JM De Guzman talked about how happy he was when he got a call from ABS-CBN that he would be part of Precious Hearts Romances presents Midnight Phantom. “Sabi ko talaga, ‘This is my time! I’m going to show the world na kaya ko.’”

Midnight Phantom is JM’s biggest TV break in almost a decade, next to a short stint on Ang TV 2 where his batchmates included Shaina Magdayao and Midnight Phantom’s lead actress Denise Laurel. JM was only 14 when he did Ang TV 2, but he left the show when he felt that his showbiz career was not going anywhere. “Naramdaman ko na parang may kulang. Bakit hindi ako nage-excel? I decided na tumigil muna ako kasi wala namang dumadating na ibang projects. Tama na muna ang TV, focus muna ako sa studies. I took up Theater Arts sa Dulaang UP, and dun ako nalaman lahat ng theories about acting, how to build your character, paano umarte sa stage.”

His theater experience helped improve his acting, and when he felt he was ready to be an actor again, he auditioned and was later cast in the 2009 Cinemalaya film Last Supper Number 3. The indie film was where Direk Lauren Dyogi, business unit head of PHR, found him and asked JM if he wanted to audition for Midnight Phantom. He passed the audition and now stars as the best friend of Rafael Rosell who plays the title role.

This 21 year-old is a mixed martial arts fighter and was almost turned down for Midnight Phantom when Direk Lauren noticed he looked way too big on screen since he looked very buff. “Mukha akong bouncer, 185 lbs ako. They told me to lose weight. Feeling ko napakalaking opportunity na makakapag-TV ako uli, so ginawa ko lahat para pumayat. Hindi ako kumain ng kanin. After a week napansin ko na pumapayat ako, so tinuloy tuloy ko na. Hanggang two years na akong hindi nagra-rice. 140 lbs ako ngayon. Pero tuloy pa rin ako sa gym, na tone lang ‘yung body ko.Makikita niyo po sa first episode [ng Midnight Phantom] mataba pa ako. Buti na lang may ten years after sa story kaya relevant ‘yung pagpayat ko.”

JM left MMA for a while to focus on being an actor. He currently stars in the Cinemalaya entry Rekrut with Joem Bascon, Alwyn Uytinco, and Pinoy Fear Factor’s Manuel Chua. He is also doing the indie film Una with Mark Solis and Yayo Aguila, and is set to star with Cristine Reyes and Zanjoe Marudo in the Kristine series.

Coming from the world of indie films and now breaking into mainstream showbiz, JM is often compared to Coco Martin, one of today’s acclaimed teleserye actors who started out doing indie flicks. Although JM considers it a compliment being compared to Coco, he said he wants to have his own identity. “Parati ngang nababanggit sa akin si Coco Martin. Naku-compare ako sa kanya. Masaya naman na nako-compare ako sa kanya pero magkaiba naman kasi kami. Iba kami ng style as an actor. Pero 100% ang respeto ko dun kasi napakagaling naman talaga.”

JM is hoping that Midnight Phantom will open more doors for him as an actor. The still single JM blushed when he was asked to name some of his celebrity crushes and dream leading ladies. “Crush ko talaga si Sam Pinto. Gandang ganda ko sa kanya nung napanood ko siya. Tsaka si Mariel (Rodriguez). Like ko talaga ‘yung may magagandang cheeks.”

"In My Life" Premieres on Cinema One

After breaking box office records and reaping numerous accolades last year, Star Cinema’s 2009 film, “In My Life” makes a grand Philippine TV premiere on the country’s no.1 cable channel, Cinema One.

Topbilled by Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos, John Lloyd Cruz and Luis Manzano, In My Life is set to premiere on Cinema One’s Blockbuster Sundays, July 18, at 8pm.

In My Life is a heartwarming story about family, friendship, love, and acceptance that puts the spotlight to Shirley (Santos), a middle-aged librarian and single mother who accepted the invitation of his son Mark (Manzano) to visit him in New York. With the help of Mark’s lover, Noel (Cruz), Shirley tries to start a new life to get away from her problems while also trying to rekindle her estranged relationship with her son. But just when things are starting to get better for Shirley in the Big Apple, she slowly discovers a dark secret her son is keeping from her.

A masterpiece from director Olivia Lamasan, In My Life takes pride in bringing back Vilma Santos into the big screen after seven years of not making movies. To make it more special, “Ate Vi” was starred alongside Box Office King John Lloyd and her son Luis—a very first not only for the Star for All Seasons but for the two young actors as well.

In My Life’s winning story made it one of the most awarded films for 2009, bagging Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Picture in several respected award-giving bodies. It received five awards from the 8th Gawad Tanglaw, seven from the 26th PMPC Star Awards for Movies, and three from the 41st Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Awards, among others.

In My Life gave Santos the Best Actress awards from Gawad Tanglaw, Gawad Suri, PMPC Star Awards, 41st GMMA, and 1st MTRCB Film Awards. Cruz, meanwhile, received Best Actor awards from 41st GMMA, 26th PMPC Star Awards; Gawad PASADO; 8th Gawad Tanglaw and 1st MTRCB Awards. In My Life also gave Manzano his first acting awards, including Star Awards’ Best Movie Supporting Actor of the Year; GAWAD Tanglaw’s Best Supporting Actor 2010 and just recently 41st Box Office Entertainment Awards of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation’s Film Actor of the Year.

Apart from awards, In My Life gained positive reviews from moviegoers and critics alike. The Philippine Daily Inquirer opinion columnist and acclaimed film critic Nestor Torre commended the film saying, “In My Life is still the most empathetic mainstream production we’ve seen this year, thanks to its leads’ sensitive portrayals and the relative fluidity and topicality of Lamasan’s storytelling. Finally, the film is a personal triumph for Vilma Santos, whose feisty and committed performance proves that, in her mid-50s, she’s at the peak of her artistry. At a time when teleserye overacting has compromised the work of many veteran stars, Vilma shows the way back to passionate, principled excellence.”

Don’t miss the Philippine TV premiere of In My Life on July 18, Sunday, on Cinema One and re-discover how the “relationship of two men teaches a woman to move on and live again”.

Cinema One is owned by Creative Programs, Inc., and distributed nationwide by Power Bundle. Creative Programs, Inc. is a subsidiary of ABS-CBN. Cinema is available on SkyCable Gold SkyCable Silver and other quality cable operators nationwide.
